"1.16.26~South Point (1st time) & South Peak CC loop starting off the big Hwy pullout, up the direct South slope. 3 miles, 1,400’ gain in 3:03hrs. To be honest, this route was pretty rough or maybe I’m just getting soft. It was steep & loose with every sharp cactus and shrub known to man ready to stab, slice and dice me with each step. The ridge traverse was just as rough having a jumble of boulder obstacles to contend with. The gully down was a shit show of epic proportions with a mixture of all mentioned above and slippery water. I lost my patience with the gully and desperately looked for the bike trail nearby which only led me to extra credit suffering. Being done with this hike was one of the best things that’s ever happened to me :@) Laszlo was nearby on his hike to Hollow Rock and we both reached our summits at around the same time and were able to capture photos of each other as tiny humans far away. We merged at a low saddle between the ridges and hiked the (shit show) gully to the bottom together & I gave him a ride to his jeep. (He was smart and stayed with the gully) He treated me to a yummy lunch and amber beer in The town of BD. Thanks friend. Warm Winter day!" — paula.raimondi • Jan 16, 2026
"Felt good to finally tick these off, I had done hollow rock before but was having an off day and didn't feel up to the summit block scramble. Coming back today I'm not sure what I was worried about, it's really not that bad. Interesting how headspace can make it feel so different.
Hiked the easy way from Mountain Springs. Weather was really nice in the morning with some interesting clouds hanging out in the canyons, though it got very windy as the day went on." — kbrack • Oct 11, 2025
"Scrambled Up From Late Night Trails. I came in from the south side was was rather thick with brush and other plants. Would recommend hiking in from South Peak across the ridgeline!" — LukeyPukey • Aug 16, 2019
"Parked before the normal trail to go up the backside of the Escarpment by Mountain Springs. We went up a steep road that ended near the top of the ridge, then traversed the ridge across to Hollow Rock Peak. From there, we traversed down & over to the highpoint of South Ridge, then continued along to South Peak. After a short lunch break, we backtracked a bit & found the path that started down the ridge heading NE. We found the first rap & I headed down first to a landing. Everyone else followed & we pulled the rope. Where's the next rap?! We didn't realize that the landing was only the first part of the rap, so we set up another anchor at the base of the tree, a few feet south. This was an awkward rap, but we made it & left the anchor in case anyone else makes the same mistake. The last rap was my favorite of the day! After that, we hiked back out to the wash near Blue Diamond Rd, where we had left a vehicle to shuttle us back. Fun day & perfect weather! " — Kevin • Apr 27, 2014
