"My first time back up to Mount Charleston since... 2017? Probably. It's been a while since I've done Charlie - and I had never previously gotten Mount Charleston Peak South. Made a nice little detour to grab that bump this time! Since the weather thwarted our central Nevada peakbagging plans, we headed back on Sunday and then went for a Mount Charleston summit on Memorial Day Monday. It was a good day - long, of course, but we were making 1000'/hr for the first 3000' feet. After that, you're along the ridgeline for so long, but I'm quite proud of our pace to get up to the ridgeline. The final push to the summit took a little longer than I'd like, but that's okay. A little snow on South Loop trail, down in the switchbacks area, but nothing that was a problem or a true hazard. Very little snow once you hit the ridgeline, and none of it was on the trail proper. The day was a bit windy, but nothing to the level of what we had been dealing with in central Nevada the two days before. Overall, a good hike and I felt good about the distance and elevation we got out of it, especially since this was Not The Plan (TM). " — psychikingjes • May 30, 2022
"After summiting Griffith Peak the night before for 4th of July view of Vegas fireworks, we camped in the meadows on the ridge and summited Charlie South for the Sunrise before heading to Charleston Peak and back down." — acekelly • Jul 5, 2021
"I decided to try Charleston as an 'after work' hike this week. I started at about 335pm and made my way up the South Loop Trail. I made a short side trip to South Charleston Peak along the way, then followed the South Ridge to Charleston from there. I made it in 4 hours flat, which wasn't that great, but it was better than last week. Again, it was super windy up there! I was at the top for about 40 minutes taking pictures of the amazing sunset and enjoying a quick bite before heading back down the SLT (mostly in the dark). It took a little over 3 hours back down. I was tired!" — Kevin • Jun 12, 2020
"Hiked up the South Loop Trail, then veered off trail and followed the South Ridge route, which is quite scenic! Took the trail back. This was my first Charleston summit of the year. I felt great going up, but didn't feel well on the way down. I don't think I had enough water on the hike." — Kevin • Aug 10, 2019
"6.18.19. 17 miles, 5,000’ gain. Spectacular Buddie day. We packed light for fast trekking but had to work hard for this summit as the snow is still very challenging. We did amazing in just our sneakers. I threw on spikes for part of the treacherous SL descent (up high). I was hoping for a fast day as I felt great but the sloppy conditions slowed us down. Normally on dry trails we would do this out and back route in under 6 hrs but today it took 8hr. We started off in rain and experienced showers off and on and even some thunder but we kept going and it ended being one of my best days in the mountains. I was able to test my puffy jacket and it worked great for rain protection too. Thanks for the company Karla! Deep dish pizza and cartwheels on the summit were the best! My 2nd time up here in 2 days." — paula.raimondi • Jun 18, 2019
"Charleston Peak #63. 9.20.18. (And Mt Charleston Peak South)...Happy Birthday Harlan! It was a happy day for me to see you on top of Mt Charleston again via Devils thumb 1 month post brain surgery. You are King of the Mountains. Big mountains! (I did not take Devils Thumb)" — paula.raimondi • Sep 20, 2018
"6 peaks (Mummy, Lee, Mt Charleston #61, South Mt Charleston H.P., Griffith & Harris) 23 miles, 8,400’ gain (the most vert. gain I’ve ever done in one workout), 14 hours. Very epic day in the mountains for me. My plan was my own version of a multi peak hike in the Spring Mtns. I woke a bit late so I was discouraged at the start but I kept moving forward and accumulated what I could. I got my 10th new ascent route to Mt Charleston. I traversed the entire North Ridge from Mummy (for the 1st time. Very sketchy in spots) I ascended Lee Peak from the ridge for the 1st time and went farther on South ridge than I’ve ever been before bagging So. Mt Charleston H.P. for my 2nd time. The sun was sinking in the sky when I arrived at Griffith but I wanted to include Harris (because I’m never doing this again) so I raced the shadows...but lost! The traverse from Griffith to Harris is a complete nightmare Barkley’s experience choked with debris, downed trees and is impossible to move quickly through. The old trail is destroyed and impossible to follow. I summited Harris with a big moon rising but darkness fell and I had to descend the rough Harris ridge in the dark from memory as my beam of light ..." — paula.raimondi • Aug 25, 2018
"We were supposed to take a long weekend to drive up to and climb Mount Shasta for Rainier training, but they had a stormy week and there was the threat of avalanches, so we stayed local. We hiked up the South Loop Trail to the top of Charleston Peak, where we had a couple little flurries. After a nice break, we headed down the same way, stopping at South Mount Charleston Peak along the way. Overall, this was a beautiful, but tiring day." — Kevin • May 18, 2018
"Did this high point after NLT, Mummy scree slope, Lee Peak, Rocketship Highpoint, Charleston Peak. Finished down SL for a loop. The 1st day of a 3 day total of 55 miles, 16,000' gain (3x Charleston Peak, 2x Lee Peak and several high points. " — paula.raimondi • Jul 2, 2016
"I needed a long, tough hike at altitude to prepare me for Mount Shasta next week. Rounded up a couple of hiking friends, packed a 50-60 pound 95 liter backpack & headed up Trail Canyon to North Loop Trail. Took NLT to Devil's Thumb. From there, we climbed the class 4 wall & took the Devil's Thumb shortcut to Charleston Peak. There were soooo many bugs up there, so we didn't stay long. We followed the main ridge across to Mount Charleston Peak South, where there was a large cairn, but no summit register. After the quick stop, we took the South Loop Trail back down to the bottom. This was exactly the hike I needed today." — Kevin • Jun 2, 2013
