"Bert and I thought we'd give this a go. The road is unmaintained after the town of Hillcrest, but enough trucks and such had been out there that I could drive the Subaru in without much trouble. One icy patch. I'm not sure how much longer you'll be able to get in with another snowfall....? It was still dry enough on the backside of the mountain, so I didn't feel uncomfortable hiking along the base with slopes above as they were still dry. With more snow, this wouldn't be a place I'd want to venture as overhead hazard could be an issue. Definitely avi potential as we get more precip. We carried snowshoes but didn't need them as the ridge was dry. Getting through the cliff band with the snow was sketchy and more than scrambling. An ice axe might have been good, but poles went in decently. Bert wore traction but I made it up without putting mine on. However, we both decided once he was up that we would not attempt to downclimb that section, so after the summit, we improvised new line. Saw some sheep and crows, but that's it. Weather was lovely but windy, as was anticipated. There are some pockets where snow is deep and if there ends up being more snow, it could get riskier for sure,..." — leigh-annewebster • Nov 18, 2023
"It had snowed earlier in the week but the temps were pretty good. It was a bit breezy but sunny. We brought snowshoes because we have been turned around more than once when the snowshoes were left in the car. The snow was a bit isothermal and it got icy under foot quickly. Getting on the ridge was a bit more challenging and we opted to go down another way avoiding the crux. A short but nice day out. If it wasn't for teh snow we would have gone for Hearts Peak as well." — BertB • Nov 18, 2023
"Original plans were disrupted by a June snowfall and a rough morning where we forgot gear...and noticed it an hour into the drive.
Decided on this quick one. Steep hiking, Lines without too much deadfall or bush exist. Travel the ATV trail until you find a clear line.
Quick. We tagged Turtle later that afternoon. " — mike_rogers81 • Jun 8, 2019
"Another fantastic, sunny Saturday atop the summit of Hillcrest Mountain in Crowsnest Pass. Though the day began extremely overcast with mountain summits covered in thick morning fog by the time we started up the fire road to the beginning of our scramble sun and light early morning winds had begun breaking up the clouds and before long we found ourselves staring at some of the most beautiful mist covered hills. The terrain up was not without its challenges as we plugged and postholed our way through sections of deep snow bypassing the southeast knoll and angling up a gentle side slope to the start of our ridge walk. One tiny section just before the ridge walk provided a bit of a thrill as my right leg punched through snow up to waist level such that I was unable to move and struggled to get a grip on some solid ground with my ski poles. My right pole became of little use as plunging it into the deep snow swept slope only resulted in it sinking over the top of the rubber handle and even then I was unable to find solid ground. Using my hands I began knocking out snow around my body until I was able to pull the stuck foot free and then it was on to the summit without further incident...." — Mountainman • Jan 19, 2013
