"It was time to get out, so I decided on Prairie mountain. On the drive in the car indicated temps of -21C and there was a slight breeze when I got out of the car. "Great, it is going to be bitter cold on the summit ridge." I thought. OK, I'll get started and probably walk around the summit cairns and immediately head back down. Much to my delight the wind was as good as non-existent and it was pleasant at the summit. I ran in to a few familiar faces." — BertB • Mar 4, 2023
"Ooops, I did it again.
This must be well over 100 x by now. Stephan loves this mountain and I am starting to hate it. It's good exercise, but c'mon.... anything but Prairie. Oh Lord, please help me! It was great for training with the 30-pound back 8 years ago for big objectives and after work on Wednesdays through the winter many years ago. It's great when the avi is high. But please, can't we do something else? Anything else....
Good news - I hadn't see a Canadian Flag up there in ages, but there was one today. Weather sucked too. " — leigh-annewebster • Dec 19, 2021
"A few words spoken at the bar Wednesday and a comment online about next year 7000m...and I find myself on a beautiful Sunday in late October on Prairie Mountain.
I left the car at 4:28am on lap 1 with a goal of doing 10 which would be a nice round 7000m elevation gain. I've never done more than 1 lap on Prairie before this.
I couldn't have done it without being inspired by previous epic achievements by Tamas, JasonM, and Miles. And the surprise company on laps 3 (RickT), 4 (RobMaiman), 5 (Billy and kids), 6 (Morgan and Rocky). Along with all the support online every time I neared the summit and was in cell range.
Lap 9 I began to feel the uphill power slipping. Lap 10 took a lot of self talk to both leave the shelter of the car at 12:09am and drag myself to the top by 1:17am. Back at the car by 2:28am after 60+km it was a hallucinatory drive home ;}
Let me be clear I blame Tamas!

"After celebrating certain life milestones the night before I was ready for a relaxed pace up. So since my friend is not a speedy hiker, we took our time. It was warmer than we expected. " — BertB • Sep 17, 2020
"Felt good on the lower sections. The upper section had enough snow to make it slippery. I broke a microspike on the summit ridge. On the way down I took to the fresh snow beside the trail. 2.5h car to car. Not too bad for getting almost no exercise." — BertB • May 12, 2020
"Snowed a ton overnight, was not expecting winter hiking! Luckily we had all the right gear but still quite the trek. Also being in the clouds the farthest you could see was about 30-40 feet in all directions from the top. " — snowsurfer • May 11, 2020
"A snowy day on Prairie. Drifts upto a meter near the summit. Normally I wouldn't add route finding, but the trail was not broken, and I had to pay attention so I would stay on route. This was due to the snow on the trail, and in the air." — BertB • Sep 29, 2019
"Joined SnS for the Tuesday afte rwork special. 1h12m up, ~2h car to car. Wore a t-shirt shortly after starting up until done. A bit breezy at the top. Snow and ice were avoidable and I did not need microspikes." — BertB • Mar 26, 2019
"A quick 2h car to car lap with Slow and Steady. Walking up to the summit as the light disappeared was neat. Also saw a lot of stars when we got back to the car. Good training." — BertB • Feb 26, 2019
"I started up with sun and -29C. Ran into Brandon B and Francisco who were on their way down. The beers I drank the night before were not helping me but this was a good way to pay for my sins. I was sweating quite a bit on the way up and took off a sweater quite early on. I carried my gloves in my hands for a good portion of the way up and down. Used my microspikes for the steep section on the way down. Shortly after the steep section I had to shed the longjohns too. Some ice was melting from the car. Drove away, -22." — BertB • Feb 10, 2019
