"Can't say I'd recommend either of these peaks but the view atop both peaks is beautiful. A bit bushy, so wear your pants and don't do it after any precipitation as you'd get drenched.
We walked up Murray and found no scrambling, except for the summit block which had one easy move. We kept walking past the Kane gully and it just plopped us out on the ridge. Lots of treadmill scree on these peaks, if you're into that sorta thing. We did the route counter-clockwise, meaning we did Mount Murray first and then over to CEGNFS. IMO this is the correct way to do these peaks, you avoid some of the treadmilling ascending CEGNFS first, instead you replace it with a great scree descent down.
Not much more to say! We were aiming for 8 hours but somehow came in quicker at 7 hours and 15 minutes, pretty happy with that considering we both felt weaker than usual. The stats recorded with a proper GPS device are 15km and 1350m gain." — hollywilliams • Aug 21, 2025
"Mt Murray and its silly shoulder hump with a dumb name. Straightforward, easy scramble, but that's just the technical rating... This is a pure scree slog, and you WILL suffer. A lot. If you want to do a 15km day with 1380m gain that feels like 2000m+ for some peaks nobody has heard of, well this is the outing for you. We read that "it's not that bad, the Kane effect really helped this one along".... I mean sure, the trail in the alpine helps you find your way back, but make no mistake, this is treadmill torture for most of it. Nobody should go up here unless there's something wrong with you. Do something else with your time, like trying to breathe water. You have been warned. If you liked this outing, please block me. " — jakefinnan • Aug 21, 2025
"Class 2 terrain ("easy/easier moderate scrambling"). I missed the Kane chimney and walked up to the summit on a decent trail, no scrambling, some exposure. On the way back, I found a narrow dully further west of Kane chimney, "easier moderate scrambling". Mt. Murray has at least 3 routes to the top, all fairly easy.
A distinct trail from the top of Cegnfs to Murray makes it a more pleasant route than many people describe. The same goes for the descent trail that bypasses Cegnfs. But I found the scree on the way to Cegnfs very loose and frustrating. A better way to do Murray-Cegnfs is probably in the counter-clockwise direction." — Taras • Oct 19, 2022
"Ron, Brent and I started out nice and early from Burstall Pass parking lot. We had a few navigational issues, but found our way up eventually. Brent wasn't feeling it and decided not to summit anything. Ron told me that Murray looked too sketchy for him and to go ahead and he'd just do Cegnfs. So, it was me by myself going up Murray.... until I looked behind me and thought I saw Ron making his way over. Turned out it was Andrei, a guy with the same jacket colour as Ron, but a different coloured helmet. I summitted just before him from the end of the ridge and he took the chimney. He had been yelling at me, but I couldn't make it out, but when I headed back down the ridge part, I turned around and saw him and asked where he came from lol. I ended up meeting up with him later on almost at the col, where I stopped to eat another few bites of my sandwich. We went down together for a bit, then I let him go ahead since he was faster. He got the guys' attention down low, then went ahead to tell them I was almost back since they had seen me descending Murray and thought they'd move downhill into the meadow. I arrived where the three guys were, ate the rest of my sandwich and ..." — leigh-annewebster • Aug 15, 2019
"Less smoky than expected. A little circuitous route finding on the way in. Stayed west of French Creek until after 1st waterfall. Then crossed a nice tree and followed flagged trail and then decided to bushwack up Cegnfs from north/left side of drainage. Traversed in sun and wind with clouds brewing to the southwest. Summitted via the far south corner which has an exciting final ridge with exposure especially when windy. Caught last minute of sun and within 5 minutes of leaving summit was in the rain. Blowing 90km/h and hail by the col...continued traversing and then dropped into the drainage that looked better than the bush. Unfortunately the drainage got steep quick and so bushwacked down. Took the east/left side of French Creek and crossed at the first cairned tree on the way back. " — alexjoseph • Aug 13, 2017
"Beautiful sunny day. The route from the Cegnfs/Murray col to the summit block looks rather daunting from far below, but is mostly just a steep walk on rubble. The scree was not as bad as we had expected. We didn't find the chimney while going up, as it curves up to the right. So continued along the base of the summit block to the south ridge and peak. On the way down, we finally found the chimney, and climbed back up along side just for the fun of descending through the chimney." — PaulHoch • Aug 29, 2016
