"Despite being a small bump in the Castle front ranges, Mount McCarty turned out to be a masochistic sufferfest that we had underestimated for this time of year. The rough Carbondale River Road is now blocked off at the clearing around 500m before the first bridge.
The trail along the valley and up to the lake would have been great in dry conditions, but there was still a significant snowpack that nearly reached the summit, which varied from supportive to soft and deep. It was a slog to reach the lake and ridge, with much post-holing, wallowing, route-finding and bushwhacking. Fueled by stubbornness, we were shattered by the time we eventually reached the summit. Fortunately it was much easier and faster to descend. This trip is not recommended for the spring, but would be a reasonable option in the Fall.

"Camped at the lake the night before, took the east ridge to the summit via the bench above the lake. Never did find a great way up from the lake to gain the ridge. But it was a beautiful ridge to the summit." — danielvanderpyl • Aug 3, 2021
