"Howard-Compression seemed like a better combo than Nihahi-Compression so I gave it a try. Howard was easy and shorter than expected (only 4 hours!). Howard's summit view was surprisingly one of the best in Kananaskis.
The traverse from Howard to Compression was mostly hiking, but eventually became moderate then difficult scrambling which was fun. There were two equally difficult cruxes near the summit, both where narrow ridges/rock fins. The remainder of Compression ridge past the summit was slow going. Several large rock towers, including the one with a window, required annoying elevation loss and route finding. Once on the east outlier I though the rest of the ridge would be easy but I was mistaken, there were still several hidden down climbs. From the northernmost bump on Compression Ridge I descended a brown shale gully which had an amazing scree ski. " — yuri • Jun 18, 2021
"I picked Jeff up at the airport at 8:30 A.M. and we went back to my place to change, get ready etc. We got a late start at 11:15 A.M. and got back at 9:15 P.M., so a long day. It was a slog and even slower since Jeff likes to take pictures and take his time, so you can easily do this in 8 hours as the book suggests on the lower end. Almost all snow was avoidable. The terrain is so austere at times in the Front Ranges. It was beautiful though. The hike in along Canyon Creek reminded me of the Ghost quite a bit. KCPS was out in the chopper flying around Canyon Creek for about 5-10 minutes, so not sure what they were up to. This one is a lot of bumps and scree along the way to a small choss pile summit. We were the first ones to sign the summit register for 2018 - woohoo!!!" — leigh-annewebster • May 25, 2018
"I wanted to do Shunga-la she in the Sheep River Area, but couldn't find partners so I joined Alison on Mt. Howard. It turned out a much better outing than expected. It turns into a nice long ridgewalk with great views towards Kananaskis core area after the initial 5km creek bed walk. It is a hike with no scrambling. Class I Terrain.
This is likely my last outing of the season. On the way back I badly twisted my ankle and then walked 7 or 8km back to the car. Still walking on crutches. " — Taras • Oct 28, 2017

"Fantastic easy/moderate scramble with great ridge views. Part of a 60km run which included Jumpingpound Ridge and Cox Hill. It was my first time up this creek since the flood, and the creek is in great shape for hiking/running. I can't wait until the road opens again!" — joannaford • Apr 16, 2016
"Came over Compression Ridge via Ford/Prarie Creek. Headed straight for the summit after losing a bit of elevation gain. Full trip report: http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=50854" — markostavric • Jun 28, 2012
"We did the Nugara approach to Howard and traversed to Compression ridge and then followed the entire ridge back to the car. Extremely windy on the last 10% of the climb. Lost my 70 cm ice axe on the last 10% of the ridge. hopefully someone finds it someday and returns it. beers on me if you do !" — dkmountainman • Jun 1, 2012
