"Very long and exhausting trip in fantastic area. Lots of wildlife and zillions of lilies - encountered a black bear on the way back. Steep, strenuous and difficult scramble keeps it entertaining all the way to the summit.
Trail is bikeable to the end of the first (dried) lake." — MikaM • Jun 29, 2025
"Mount Costigan was a beautiful, but tiring day in the quiet eastern corner of Banff National Park. On May 30th, we set out from the big berm by the Ghost River, biking 4km into Devil's Gap and then hiked the excellent trail for another 8km to the eastern end of Lake Minnewanka. After a short bushwhack, we followed the south ridge up to a point where we had to do a long side-sloping slab and scree traverse below steep cliff before finding our way up to the summit ridge.
There were a few sections of difficult scrambling on loose crumbly rock before reaching the summit. On the way down we traversed a little lower than our ascent route to avoid gaining elevation, but ended up wasting some time off-route and getting slabbed out. The return trip felt long and we were grateful to have our bikes waiting.
