"Multi-day Wapta trip May 2 - May 4, 2026 (2 nights 3 days), to get the summit of Lilliput Mountain. Looking at this peak from the south is quite striking, yet from the north it is merely a plod up a somewhat gentle slope. I've wanted to summit this peak since seeing it for the first time in August 2022 during a stay at the Scott Duncan hut. The way we did it was great because we got to ski up/down Balfour high col, however this would be a very enjoyable outing from SD hut as there looks to be a nice skiable line that we were unable to take due to our direction of travel (having to go back north rather than south).
For this trip, we started at Bow Lake and made our way to Bow Hut where we spent one night. On day 2 we did the push from Bow Hut to Lilliput Mountain and then back to Balfour Hut for the night. On day 3, we exited Balfour Hut to the car. We did intend to stay an additional night at Bow Hut on exit but arrived at the hut fairly early in the afternoon and the weather was less than ideal to go out and do anything.
Excellent travel up on the Wapta right now, coverage is fantastic everywhere. The canyon is on it's last legs, I imagine the snow bridges will all be melted..." — hollywilliams • May 3, 2026
"Lilliput mountain isn't typically an objective that most seek out, it's mostly done by eager folks traversing from Balfour Hut to Scott Duncan Hut during a guided Wapta Traverse.... but it's a peak I haven't done yet on the Wapta, a place where I've been many times and have an endless list of memories during my trips up there.... This peak, while not the most impressive, has always been on my list, especially after I took an incredible colorful sunrise shot of it in January 2025, which hangs 3ft wide on our wall at home. It was a special trip, with perfect weather. It was a nice treat seeing my photos in the Bow and Balfour hut brochures. Thanks to the ACC for recognizing my captures of this amazing spot in our country. Alberta separatists, if you can even read, go away, this province is incredible and better off without you, just look at it! " — jakefinnan • May 2, 2026
"Started at Scott Duncan at 2pm after a morning whiteout. Skied as far as we could up the ridge then bootpacked up the rime. Significant cornice along the summit ridge, probed and shortroped the last 50m or so until we topped out. " — BobbyG • May 2, 2017
