"Class 3 terrain ("upper moderate scramble") via the main avalanche gully. Minimal scrambling but the terrain is very steep, confidence on steep slabs required.
We cycled 5.6km instead of 6.1km suggested by Kane until red flagging on a tree. We crossed Redearth Creek on a tree log. This is a far better route than cycling all way to the campground." — Taras • Aug 20, 2022
"Went climbers right to get around the cornice as their wasn't much of it remaining and the ridge was clear.
On descent I wanted to take the gully but got mixed up while looking for it.
Next mistake is I followed down to the regular switchback that goes around the cornice. From the summit I should of stayed skiers right more to get down to the other ridge and eventually the top of the gully. |Back at the switchback their looked to be a trail to get into the gully. Maybe from goats or other climbers looking for the gully.
Instead of listening to reason I got sucked in did some very difficult scrambling to get down a series of ledges till finally I was in the gully. A lesson learned, thankful for the outcome and happy to share.
Maybe since I wanted to take the alternate descent I should of followed the regular route around the cornice. That way I could of gotten a better look around to decide where I would go to find the gully.
Even with being off trail in some steep terrain it was nice day. I spotted a bear from above and ran into three goats. The summit was a very relaxing one with some great views." — Randy • Jul 9, 2019
"Supposed to be sunny but woke up to windy and 13C (not bad) but then hit heavy rain enroute to Canmore in the dark...couldn't see any peaks on the way into Canmore. Met Babette and Canmore Visitor Center in the rain saying "Are we really going scrambling?" Light rain at Red Earth parking lot gave way to blue skies on the bike in. Campground seem to come 1km early and easy trail to the sidehilling which was much easier than described and then straight up with a few right and left maneuvers to avoid steeper ground. Summit had couple cm of snow but view is spectacular. That is when we noticed the smoke coming back in (WTF). Anywho great views of Ball, Beatrice, Stanley and Storm a bunch of my remaining summits to wrap in 2019 as they had fresh snow. Once we determined the skiers right was the descent it was one of the best I've encountered. 1000m-ish of perfect sandy small scree which gave way to vegetation and a patch of wild raspberries and then easy grass b-line to the bikes. All in all for a peak that is rarely climbed...that was excellent! Thanks for a great day Babette!

"This day turned into an epic.... we biked into the Lost Horse campsite with no issues, and then headed up to our objective. Stephan didn't enjoy the bushwhacking and we had some trouble interpreting the Kane third edition's proper gully. We ended up ascending the right-most gully and doing some difficult scrambling to attain the ridge up a bit of steep staircase like Whymper, but steeper with more high-steps. This was less sketchy though than the slab scrambling lower down in the drainage which reminded me of Rundlehorn. At the summit I downloaded a .gpx track to ensure we got into the proper descent gully and then we headed down. Stephan said it was his least favourite scramble ever and we had a few couple spats with him trying to manipulate me into climbing more with him after this fiasco of a scramble, saying I owed him big time for this. We filled up on some awesome cold water from the creek running down the mountain and saw two mountain goats handling the steep slabs on skier's right no problem. I decided we should descend right to Redearth Creek and bushwhack from there. We decided to cross the river at one point - why not - it was hot. If you take the shorter 6km appr..." — leigh-annewebster • Jul 5, 2018
"The weather was great so we went up. Biked the road, some trail and some bushwhack to get to the gully, and up we went. We saw a goat up above and at one point it ran past us going downhill. We scrambled up the moderate section, got on the flat ridge on the top and enjoyed the summit shortly afterwards. A great day." — BertB • Oct 17, 2015
