"Bighorn Traverse: Hat (Sheep) Mtn, The Top Hat, Gabriel, Bighorn, Wilhorn and Wilson Peaks
plus bunch of sub-peaks in between; should've brought bike, would've saved about 8.5km walking (~4.25k each way); no water source and super WINDY. Plus smoke by noon :(" — alexp • Jun 9, 2023
"Jenna, Kate and I went back to Ya Ha Tinda. I had initially wanted to do Willson, but felt a bit guilty asking the ladies to join on it if it was a long slog and right next door to our previous objective Hat. Mountain. So I thought we'd do a shorter day on The Diamond so I didn't feel as bad. However, I did let them make the call about the river crossing, which was a big NO from their end, so we ended up doing Willson anyways! The good news is that while it took Cornelius 10 hours, it only took us 8.5 in total and there was almost no snow. So the day was salvaged and we still didn't have to use headlamps.
WIllson has great approach trails, a bit of strenuous bushwhacking, then a slog up the grassy slope to the false summit, a small scramble down and some scree slogging to the final summit cairn and register. It was clear and bright but not too windy. We saw three sheep and a large herd of elk, which is probably more than the hunters saw. We drove back with no issues except dust from oncoming vehicles in the dark and kept an eye out for wildies as we have seen them hanging around the road a bit..." — leigh-annewebster • Nov 11, 2021
