"Cactus Bomb Peak is just S of Bootleg Spring Peak; I'd warn you to avoid both unless you are wearing really tough boots or maybe stainless steel socks LIDAR gives Cactus Bomb a prominence of 250', which isn't much." — hwstock • May 1, 2026
"Bootleg Spring Peak should be renamed "Cactus Bomb Peak." A test of the new wheels. No pics from Shaft, as I'd left my phone in the car; I thought I'd left it on the hood, so I beat it back to the car, as the winds were gusting to 20 mph. Then I decided it was a good time to test the new vehicle by driving to the start of Bootleg hike... last here with the old soob 16 years ago. Thanks to Laszlo for suggesting this hike." — hwstock • Mar 31, 2026
"8.14.2021~Ibolya Ridge & Shaft Peak w/Jimmy. Just a couple short peaks to get out today the house and see some pretty views. Ibolya Ridge was the prettiest peak and had a neat mini knifes edge to scamper across. Shaft had the best views of the two. It was warm with a late morning start, but we love the heat. We parked along the Hwy (for Ibolya) & jumped the short part of the fence but there weren’t any “no parking” signs…I’m sure it’s not proper but it was the most direct route. 2 peaks, 2 miles, 1,100’ gain, 1:37hrs. "After only getting a couple hours of sleep, we headed out to hike a few smaller peaks for an easy Sunday. We started with Shaft Peak, parking just off of NV-160 and following the dirt road up to the tower, then cross-country up the western ridge to the peak. The views were nice, but my calves were cramping up during the ascent. Instead of crossing NV-160 to do Misty Mountain, we descended the north slope of Shaft down to another dirt road and hiked the road to the base of Bootleg Spring Peak, which we ascended via the eastern slope. We took the same way back." — Kevin • Dec 3, 2017
