"A very good one, lots of solid hands on scrambling up to Lineham ridge. This is rated moderate by Nugara but is a difficult scramble on solid rock with exposure if you stick to the ridge which is a great idea. Not sure where the moderate rating comes from, it's stiffer than many difficult rated scrambles. Nothing too crazy but very scrambly/hands on with a few spots of 4th class no fall zones. If you were to return back down the ridge, it would be quite slow going and very exposed. Rock quality is excellent and grippy.
If you're looking to get hands on rock this is one of the best outings I've done, feels like a real "scramble" rather than a typically Rockies chossy grind where you put your hand down every now and then for balance. Lots of actual scrambling! Comparable to Engadine ridge or Opal ridge traverse. 5 stars from me! Approach shoes were great on the way up, chewed my ankles on the way down though. Picklejar lakes and trail are nice!
Stats are all over the place on this one, it is actually 15.5KM and 1450m of total gain for the loop as measured by a real GPS. 7.5 hours for us. " — jakefinnan • Jul 12, 2025
"Now this is a proper scramble, so much hands on! Nugara rates this as a moderate scramble in the book but I would say it's a difficult scramble. Very enjoyable outing on an established popular hiking trail, followed by lots of hands on until Lineham Ridge, then mostly hiking and easy scrambling over to Picklejar Peak, followed by a descent gully down to the lakes, and back out via the established hiking trail. The descent gully is nice scree for the first half and then the latter half is a scree/rubble blend and slower going. We took about 1 hour from the top of the gully down to the lake. Bring your helmet! We were pretty careful in the descent gully but when the odd rock did fly, we were surprised just how fast and far they went.
Approach shoes are perfect for this outing with the exception that your ankles might received a little rock love on descent. Jake wore ankle socks so his ankles got a little chewed up, I wore long thick socks which helped.
15.6km 1450m gain in 7.5 hours with lots of breaks." — hollywilliams • Jul 12, 2025
"Very pleasant scramble to the top of Lineham Ridge. I found it to be "difficult" (Class 3/4) rather than "moderate" scramble, as described in Nugara's book. Deadly exposure on both sides in a few places, but rock is very good. "Easy" scramble to higher Picklejar Peak. The descent is tedious but straightforward. " — Taras • Oct 13, 2024
"Nugara route loop , from Lineham Ridge to Picklejar Peak . Descended scree slope towards the lakes. Interesting ridge. Cloudy, chilly and a bit hazy day but overall good conditions ." — PawelG • Jul 27, 2024
