"This is a fairly straightforward climb in a beautiful area of Waterton Park.
We started the day at Red Rocks canyon, which was deserted at our early start time...a rare treat!
We followed the snowshoe trail for 4-5 km, until we reached the Goat Lake turnoff. This is doubletrack, and very easy going. We needed to cross two drainages coming down from Glendowan, and they were flowing. One had a makeshift bridge, and the other was an easy rock-hop. No issues.
The trail to goat lake covers elevation quickly, but it is nicely graded. It is mostly snow free until the waterfall, with the exception of one easily crossed gully (which may make beginner hikers uneasy). There was snow around the lake and campground, and this continued for the next couple hundred vertical meters. The hiking trail to Avion Ride/Newmand Col was burred until the top, but the direction of travel is obvious. Snow was hip deep, and mostly, but not totally supportive. We found easy routes through the two rockbands (falls) above the lake, though neither were "official". Once above the snow, we quickly made our way to the official trail...the scree here is NOT good for climbing, so the trail really helps.

"Supposed to be Waterton ABC (Alderson - Buchanan - Carthew) traverse. But the trail got closed due to lightning previous night and potential fires, so we had to find something else.
Part of Newman / Avion traverse. Zero visibility and strong wind at the summit.
Started at 9:40am, done at 5:30pm. 28.7km in distance with 1400+m of accumulated elevation gain." — alexp • Aug 15, 2015
