"Farewell Autumn, Welcome Winter. 12~22~21~Cathedral Rock Peak (8,599’) “me time” during a 2 day Family Xmas Vacation at the Mt. Charleston lodge. 4 snow miles, 1,100’ gain 2:00hrs. I carried my snow shoes on my back but despite the shin deep snow near the summit, I just let my new warm Keen boots do all the work. My kids made the most friendly and happy snowman couple. It made everyone driving by wave and smile. It’s so cozy here in the rustic cabin." — paula.raimondi • Dec 22, 2021
"Another failed attempt at Griffith. There was a nice crust on the snow, but it was still pretty powdery underneath. We were able to get to about 9300 feet in snowshoes before the snow started to get unstable and we started to think about the possibility of avalanches. We took off our snowshoes and used an ice axe and pole for the descent, so we would have more control going down over the cliffbands. In retrospect, we should have put the snowshoes back on after the crux, but we are stubborn, so we post-holed the rest of the way back to the Cathedral Rock Trail. We took the trail up to Cathedral Rock for another consolation summit before returning along the slushy path to the car. " — Kevin • Mar 6, 2021
"This is the second week in a row we got turned back on Griffith Peak. Once you get off of the Cathedral Rock Trail, the snow is still way too dry and powdery. We got much farther than last week, but still had to turn back. It's a good thing we did - once we got home, the weather turned really bad. At least we still bagged Cathedral Rock on the way back." — Kevin • Feb 13, 2021
"Our goal today was to do a snow climb up Mazie Canyon to Griffith Peak. The Cathedral Rock Trail that we started on was beat down pretty good, but once we left that to start up Mazie Canyon, there were no more tracks and the snow was not quite consolidated yet. We pushed on very slowly for a while, postholing along and breaking trail. We didn't get too far before I was potholing tits-deep; that's when I decided to call it. As a consolation, we descended back to the Cathedral Rock Trail and made our way to the top of CR instead. We'll give the snow a week to consolidate, then try again. " — Kevin • Feb 6, 2021
"This is such a fun little hike to take when you need to get away from the city and clear your head. I love going up there during the sunset and just staring into the canyon, zoning out. " — alexehagen • Sep 28, 2019
"6.4.19....Trying to get to the ridge a few ways then Plan B~Cathedral Rock peak in Luna sandals. 11 miles, 3,700’ gain. I got sketched out by the creepy angles when we were heading up old south Loop on the ridge. Karla tried to coach me up but I was spooked...Then we turned around on that section at 9,600’...we went back down to the Griffith Avalanche chute and went up that to 9,200’. Then we went back down to the cars, I put on sandals and we did Cathedral Rock peak with a visit to angel falls. The Maize Canyon Avalanche chute obliterated a section on that route so plan B was crazy difficult too! I showed Karla the (top of little falls) route I take to the ridge in the Summer...Karla taught me how to glissade, go down a steep snow slope and fall correctly. Great day! Tomorrow we go back with the Master & better gear to get to the top!" — paula.raimondi • Jun 4, 2019
"I had managed to avoid this one all these years because of the crowds, but needed to keep it short & fast today. Got there early & surprisingly, had it all to myself! It's a nice little hike." — StudioHoodoo • Jul 15, 2018
"Tried a new (to me) route up to Griffith Peak via Cathedral Rock Ridge. Stopped at Cathedral Rock on the way up. We took the 'Old' South Loop Trail down, which is steeper than the standard route." — Kevin • Aug 26, 2017
"We were going to continue up the ridge to Griffith Peak, but we were feeling lazy & tired after our 22 mile jaunt the day before, so we decided to do easy Cathedral Rock, then head down." — Kevin • Aug 13, 2017
"Took the trail up to the shoulder of Cathedral Rock, then continued on a faint path to Trail Canyon Overlook, which provided fantastic views! After a quick break, we went back the same way and ascended Cathedral Rock as well." — Kevin • Jul 23, 2017
