"Some days you don't have time for a big objective and so Gusty Peak was a good option for today. The approach via Chester Lake was very scenic and then once you get to Gusty it's basically your classic slog up a whole bunch of scree & rubble. To make the ascent more interesting we stuck to solid rock ribs as much as possible, making the scrambling a bit more interesting. On descent we followed the well worn trail through the scree." — geoffhardy • Jul 3, 2023
"Started from Chester Lake parking lot, and headed up to Headwall Lakes.
For Fortress South, we opted to to avoid loosing elevation by sidehilling the talus on the east side of the valley. I recommend taking the proper trail on the valley floor. This would have been faster in the long run. The trail is intermittent and steep and loose. However, not difficult. Just grind it out. Once you’ve gained the ridge, it’s a straight forward walk with so great views.
We dropped back into the valley and took the main route up to Fortress. This was an easy ascent, just stick to the trail. There’s a little scrambling to gain the summit block.
After having lunch on The Fortress, we made a quick descent to the Chester Lake valley. We filled out water and headed up to Gusty Peak. The main route was snowbound. We considered crossing the snow, but a mistake would either send you crashing into rock, or fling you over a cliff. We didn’t have micro spikes and the snow was slush in some spots. This condition, pushed us up higher to get around the snow patches. We ended up scrambling on loose rock and slab to gain the ridge for the last 200m. We then needed to traverse the super exposed ridge ..." — ivo • Aug 6, 2022
"Stephan was a saint and agreed to redo this pile of trashy rock. Luckily, he actually liked it since they didn't get a view last time. I didn't. I did it cause it's in the book. I had to move for a rock someone knocked down and then someone in our group let a microwave-sized rock go, which luckily changed direction. But the summit views are quite good and the approach via Chester is easy. I hate hiking out on that trail though - I should really bring a bike someday. Going to try Galatea tomorrow and then I'll be done with Chester Lake for a while lol. Gusty and I have a special relationship - it eluded me three times before. I couldn't make the first planned ascent as I had a family commitment, so the guys went without me. The second time Ron and I wandered into the other valley and ended up on the other side of it by accident, the third time it snowed in August and I didn't have the desire to twist an ankle on the melting, slippery snow. Too funny that such a nasty pile of trashy scree would give me so much grief, but it's all done now. Not on the list of ones to redo in case you're wondering. 132 Kane Peaks now... might be one of the last ones for the season :(" — leigh-annewebster • Sep 5, 2020
"Nice approach valley, but the ascent itself was a boring, nastily steep scree slog. remaining snow forced us to do some moderate scrambling. The views however were epic, especially of The Fortress." — yuri • Aug 23, 2020
"Beautiful day for a double Kane peak ascent. Gusty had snow but not enough to turn us back. Probably one more snowfall and we would have turned back but in this case it helped going up and down. Upper final bit had some exposed sections. Summit was pretty narrow for 6 people. Wicked day which led us on to bagging Fortress too (and 2 of our party bagging Chester instead)." — alexjoseph • Sep 24, 2016
"Family trip with the lil one. This Gusty peak is nasty: slog and scree. I'd say the best time to do it late September through November, when the scree is frozen and much easier to walk on." — alexp • Aug 9, 2015
"Summitted in whiteout conditions with a CSMC group. It was probably at least -20C with windchill on the top. Snow was blowing so hard that on the way back I could often see only a couple meters ahead. Definitely an epic day! " — Taras • Sep 29, 2013
