"Quick hike before the afternoon rain. We left from the parking lot behind the Jeep dealership on U.S. Route 1 and headed up Bow Ridge. Right after the crest of the ridge is Kallenberg Quarry, which is essentially a rectangular cut-out of the ridge. I climbed around several of the walls before descending into the center of the quarry and continuing south. The next point of interest was the Wolf Pits, a pair of deep stone-lined holes likely built in the 18th or 19th century to trap wolves. We extended the hike a bit to visit the Walden Pond overlook and Balance Rock before turning back north to complete the loop. As the trail dropped in elevation and approached some wetlands, the paths got muddier. Some sections were flooded, including one part where the footbridge was mostly underwater and we were greeted by a snake swimming across. Luckily, we were able to traverse the trails without getting too muddy, and in any case there was a hose at the trailhead we used to clean off." — JCalautti • May 18, 2025
