"Flipping through Jones' "Rockies Central" for a peak for a father and son weekend trip, I noticed an unnamed peak that was listed as having "no recorded ascent". This seemed like a good objective for our trip, so we drove to a trailhead at Moose Meadows near Johnston Canyon, arriving late afternoon. A hot day (31 C) made the trail hiking rather sweaty, but we arrived at Johnston Creek (Jo18) backcountry campground at 9pm. Following the backpacking trail the next morning to just past the bridge that crosses onto the north side of Johnston Creek a couple kilometers upstream of Jo18, we left the trail in a meadow and headed up an avalanche gully, ascending easy scree to a col. Reaching the col, we proceeded across a small snow-covered plateau that had been hidden from view when below the col. We ascended to a short ridge just below the summit.
Proceeding along the ridge onto the north side of the summit, we climbed a short (2 m height) 3rd class step to reach the summit. There was no cairn on the summit, so we put a small one in place. It being another very hot day, we were glad to be done the exertion part and we descended the way we had come. We hiked out to "Larry's Camp" (Jo9)..." — wfinlay • Jul 8, 2017
