"Trek from Abergynolwyn. Up old road and then to the slate quarries. Here the OS map and reality parted company significantly. A couple of frustrating attempts to follow paths through the forest thwarted the more ambitious plans to take in the hills on the ridge. So, losses cut, found a way to the south of this hill, and then made the arduous climb up the south side after making way along loggers' roads and what have you. Returned by cutting down north-west, through a swathe of recently timbered forest and back on to a track. Overall, a pretty beastly walk. Attacked by midges near the summit to add insult to injury." — vygodski • Jul 13, 2019
"Tuesday 20th March 2018. An ascent of Mynydd Braich-gôch 597m/70m and Tarren y Gesail 667m/463m from Corris Uchaf, Gwynedd. 15.9km, with 675m of ascent. 5hrs 20mins.
Unsure of the amount of snow still lying on the passes into Snowdonia, I took a long route via Welshpool to the start of my planned hike. This proved to be a bad decision, as there were strings of road-works. I had forgotten that the end of the financial year was approaching, and local authorities were doing the usual thing of spending the remains of their road maintenance budgets. This added an additional hour to my journey.
I eventually arrived in the small village of Corris Uchaf and set off just before 2 o'clock. The route up the hill involved hiking along a grit road into Coed Tyglas, an extensive commercial forest. The road wound up the hill steeply in a series of tight zig-zags. As I approached the fourth hair-pin bend I heard the rumble of lorries behind me. A convoy of logging lorries passed me, as I stood well off the road out of harm's way. The drivers gave me a friendly wave as they passed. I could also hear the engines of loaded lorries descending, so I decided to head off the track on path..." — marktrengove2 • Mar 20, 2018
