"Peak 3986 was the first peak of six (3968, Mt. Scorpion, Black Hill, 3954, Railroad, 4040) on this north to south adventure. We decided to drive out to the mountain on the west side jeep trail and start at the bottom of a steep, loose chute just north of the first peak. The chute was like all the others on the west side of the mountain....loose and steep. With some patience we were able to pick our way up some decent, larger talus that made the slippage tolerable. Hiking poles were a major help. From Peak 3968 we traversed the ridge line to the south and tagged 5 more peaks. The ridge line has a lot of gain and loss on it, with some fun route finding. There is a lot of broken rock...from scree to boulders. There is an exit chute to the west that is just north of the last peak, Peak 4040, that we felt would be a very desirable exit in the future. For this adventure we went back to the saddle between Railroad Peak and Peak 3954, a known route. Once back down to the valley floor we followed the jeep trail back to the starting TH. Definitely a scramblers route." — Heartattackbruce • Feb 5, 2023
"A fine traverse that gets better the further you go. Someone made A Joe out of the rocks on railroad hill . Also saw a homeless encampment right in front of scorpion peak guy looks like he has been there a minute " — joshortman • Jan 19, 2023
"10.16.2021~Black Hills Quad Massacre, solo North to South Ridge Ramble of all 6 High Lumps & Bumps. 3,868’, Mount Scorpion, Black Hill, 3,954’, Railroad Peak (Highpoint) & 4,040’ (then Back to Railroad Peak). 7 miles, 3,000’ gain in 5:27hrs. I had so much fun yesterday, I went back for more. I got to the HP, Railroad peak (5th peak of 6) in 2:40hrs. A personal best for me. This mountain ridge is a giver. Its rugged, exposed at times and very challenging with views of grandeur. I ate steak and potatoes before the trek so during I consumed no food and went thru the 67 oz of water I brought. I made some repairs to a few registers that were battered and added ziplock bags to protect the paper. These are rarely visited peaks except for the easy to get to North end shoulder which gets the most visits because it’s easy. Some only get 1 or 2 sign-ins per 1.5 years and it’s mostly my name :@) A few times I heard some animal or reptile hiss as I went by. I didn’t stick around to see what made the sound. Great day! Tad on the warm side with some cool breezes that refreshed me. I view this mountain everyday from my kitchen window in Henderson, NV." — paula.raimondi • Oct 16, 2021
