"I arrived at the AMC Highland Center around 8:30am, and it was cold enough that I began my day with long pants, long sleeves, a fleece, and even considered donning my windbreaker. I took the shuttle from the Highland Center to the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trailhead, but walked along Base Station Road so I could stop briefly at the Cog Railway Base Station. During this walk, the temperature had already heated up to the point where I had to remove the fleece and zip off the pant legs. I set off along the Ammonoosuc Link around 9:45am and, even though the first 2 miles of the trail are shaded, I rolled up my sleeves and began regretting bringing thicker layers. Starting from the Base Station, the first 1.5 miles of the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail is mildly sloped, although very rocky from the start. Despite the dryer weather, the Ammonoosuc River was roaring along just fine, creating a wonderful forest ambience with occasional glimpses of the sun as it crested over Mt. Washington. The dry and cool weather also accelerated the leaves turning color; I was treated to a small percentage of yellow leaves lining the trees and dotting the forest floor. "Day two of the Presidentials in NH. It was too socked in too see anything from the peaks, but it would've been beautiful. The southern peaks are much less prominent so are easier. Monroe and Little Monroe were just a quick jog from the hut, and Franklin was just a bump. Eisenhower made for an interesting ascent, because there is some krummholz close to the top. Pierce felt pretty short compared to the others, but it was challenging on the way down. The descent felt eternal and it was definitely a slog at times. Overall, and incredible trip and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience." — elimihuta • Jun 28, 2025
"Started early from the AMC Highland Lodge, then climbed up to Mizpah Hut, summited Pierce, Eisenhower, Franklin, Little Monroe and Monroe. Then dropped the pack and Turkey and I ran the ridge 5 more miles out to Boot Spur and took a peak down in Tuckerman’s Ravine." — wiweasel • Jul 4, 2024
"Single-day Presidential Traverse to finish off 3 days of peakbagging and Appalachian Trail redlining in White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire. The Traverse, spanning Pinkham Notch to Crawford Notch, covered 25 miles and 8,300 feet of elevation gain in 14 hours moving. The southern presidentials were below the cloud cover, the the climb over Mount Monroe provided the first summit views of the day" — wacbravo • Sep 9, 2019
"Great day for hiking upper elevations, bright blue sky and temps in the 50s and a reasonable wind. Went up Ammonoosuc Ravine and took Crawford trail south to climb Monroe. So went over West Peak on route." — Alohabuffy • Nov 19, 2016
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again. Last week we got blown off of Madison before we could summit. This week we did a last minute change of plans as the weather looked favorable for a traverse. Temps were at least 30 degrees warmer (more if you include the lack of windchill). Just under 20 miles over the highest peaks in NH." — markst-john • Mar 26, 2016
"Last week we attempted a full traverse of the Presidential Range - bailing out on top of Mt Washington due to conditions and lack of time. This week we decided to go back and finish what we started last week. We hiked the Ammonoosuc Trail from the Cog Railroad Base station up to Mt Washington and went south hitting Mt Washington, Monroe, Little Monroe, Franklin, Eisenhower and Pierce. A top ten hiking day under cloudless skies and warm temps.

"Attempted a full Presidential Traverse last weekend, but due to weather and a lack of time, we had to bail at Washington. So this weekend we went back out and finished what we started! It was an absolutely gorgeous sunny day, hiking up and over snow covered peaks. Honestly couldn't have asked for a better hiking day!" — matt-beard • Dec 5, 2015
"Crawford Path hike including Mts. Eisenhower, Franklin & Monroe (with West Pk). Great ridge walk on a terrific day. John had climbed Moosilauke the day before so he lagged behind some. Stopped at Lakes of the Clouds hut on the way down via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Tr." — SteveM_StickMan • Sep 7, 2009
