"This route is a good contender for the most difficult of the standard Idaho 12er routes. It requires lots of fitness and a strong mental game, especially with a little snow thrown in. Despite the difficulty, we couldn't have asked for a better day. Bluebird skies with haze only in the distance, clear views of all the central Idaho mountains to the west, not even a hint of threatening weather. These two mountains are difficult to reach, leave little choice for reducing exposure, and my glissading definitely needs work. But the ridge scramble to Mount Church is definitely worth the extra effort." — robkleffner • Jul 11, 2020
"Did this as my final 12'r for the list finish. The scramble up the Headwall is quite intense. From the picture provided on the Idaho Summit Guide page I would highly recommend taking the route to the left and not the right. The left is used far more and poses far less risk. The ridge was pretty simple. The weather was good but very smokey." — Irrationalist • Aug 18, 2018
"Ryan Byers summitted, the crazy man, but I called it quits partway up the headwall. Several things went wrong along the way and I was left exhausted by those mistakes. I don't recommend the Jones Creek approach; it seems likely that the North Fork Jones Creek route is more stable. We ascended the wrong gully at first, and met another group that had made the same mistake, saying it cliffed out. A full hour wasted, including much of my energy since the wrong gully was so steep. Then I took an indirect route that I thought looked like a trail, but wasn't. Huge energy sap, and Byers wisely did not follow. Going up a rather exposed part of the headwall was the final straw for me. I sat at the lake and enjoyed the view while hiding from the wind. Props to Byers for having the gumption to get both on peaks on a 12 hour trek. Knowing the routes for this one would probably make it a hell of a lot more enjoyable!" — robkleffner • Jul 7, 2018
