"Craziest day yet in the Lost River range. Reached the summit with Ryan Byers despite it.
Fires are causing air quality problems in Idaho right now. Additionally, there was a thunderstorm right over us at 7 am. Very strange and lightning struck about half a mile away from us, loudest sound I've ever heard and caused us both some concern. I'd been looking at the forecast so we knew that the storms would clear up, but we did contemplate heading back as the lighting got bad. Thankfully after that nearby strike the storm died down and did not reappear. We started up again and soon the skies were hazy but clear.
After a short approach through the trees (long pants saving our legs from the nettle) we reached the start of the Super Gully. Not a trace of snow was left. It wasn't too bad at first but steadily grew looser and sketchier until we reached the top of the 'Stadium of the Gods'. I can see why this area is referred to as a bowling alley, and I would say helmets are a necessity. Despite that the Stadium was a fun and challenging section; above it was a hellish and tedious field of loose scree. "We had lots of rain this week and today was a clear day. I thought the super gully would be "firm" and scree stable. I was right 3;45 to the top and 1;30 down. Only 1 more 12er in Idaho to complete them all!" — brianposter • Aug 9, 2014
