"Did this trying to hit it before a storm, failed doing so. The South Ridge route really means to go up the bowl not the south ridge which is a pretty intense class 4 at a minimum if you try to hit it right away. Amazing summit would definitely do it again without forest fire smoke." — Irrationalist • Aug 17, 2018
"Finally got another Idaho 12er! Summitted with Ryan Byers. I would say Breitenbach is not a difficult mountain, but it is strenuous. The upclimb was not bad since the scree was actually quite packed; this turned out to be a nuisance on the way down for our poor knees. We were quick on the ascent due to mosquitoes all the way to 11,500 ft! It was a very warm day with very little breeze, so the layers I brought ended up mostly slowing me down.
Early on we passed another group of hikers. As we ran into them again on our way back from the summit, they mentioned wanting to try a traverse to Lost River peak. Byers was more excited at the prospect than I was, since I have less gumption for exposure and was already pretty drained. Nevertheless, we waited for the other group to return and set off to see what the crux of the ridge looked like. As soon as we got to a good vantage point my hopes of an easy traverse were dashed. I decided to begin my descent to the car while the others gave it a shot before turning back themselves. Apparently it is either short class 4 or 5 along the ridge, or descending below the climbing sections on some awful looking steep scree to go below and up around ..." — robkleffner • Jul 14, 2018
