"Apart from the initial ascent to the ridge and the descent over sandstone, this route need not be above class 2. We chose to climb all the edges and spires along the limestone ridge as practice for an upcoming climb. If you use the GPS for the sandstone descent, note the we occasionally missed the cairns and took more intense downclimbs. If you stop seeing cairns in the sandstone descent, look harder! Often the cairns are ABOVE across a gap. This the 22nd Gray Cap ascent I have logged by GPS." — hwstock • Nov 21, 2023
"We woke up to a surprise snow storm that day. When we started heading up Gateway canyon the melt ensued and the canyon began to flow! What a magical experience. We hiked through waterfall after waterfall, 30 of them or more. The excess of water prevented us from getting to the summit but it will still be one of the most memorable hikes ever in RR for me. "With snow all over Red Rock, even the lower elevations, we set out to just ramble an area that most of it was unexplored by Scott. It was a first for the both of us to see the damn in the upper part of Brownstone Canyon. On the way back we decided to tag Peak 5078, that I now see that we were the first to ascend. It is a crumbly, scree surrounded peak that has it's challenges to descend from back into Gateway Canyon. The route also included the pictographs and petroglyphs in Brownstone Canyon. "Really solid few hours. Goat bed to grey cap is pretty mid, but coming down grey cap and going up new Peak I thought was very fun. Goat bed is in dire need of a new register. Need to do a mega loop with all of these peaks one day " — joshortman • Dec 15, 2022
"4.7.22~7.5 miles, 2,500’ gain, 5:15hrs. Brownstone Picto’s, Grey Cap to Goat Bed traverse with a Red Rock Living Room finish…CW loop from Kraft lot via Gateway Canyon. I led Frances on a touring route to places she’s never been. I have only done the Grey Cap ridge traverse once w/Harlan a few years ago (the opposite direction) and forgot what a sharp and long ridge it is. I don’t even think it’s that long, it just seems that way. Great loop. We saw a happy face emoji in nature. 2 of um! Good workout. Spring has Sprung. Blooms everywhere. "I had done the Twin Tanks route to Grey Cap before, but never followed the route all the way to the tanks first, so I did that today. I took it easy because it was pretty warm (although not normal Vegas summer temps). Once up Grey Cap, I contemplated traversing to Goat Bed Peak, but decided to descend the way I came up and try the northern route up Kraft instead. I took a tumble on the way down; nothing too terrible, but there is a nice bump and bruise on my shin. Temps were warming up as I hiked down the wash towards the start of the Kraft route, so I decided to abort that plan as well. I continued around Kraft Mountain and hiked back to the car." — Kevin • Jun 23, 2019
"Took the 'standard' route to Grey Cap, which I hadn't done before. From the Kraft Trailhead, you take the trail up to the top of 'Hell Hill', then descend down into Gateway Canyon. From there, you follow the wash to the sandstone, then scramble up to the summit. Not the most direct route, but it was fun. Once at the summit, we decided to traverse the ridgeline down to Goat Bed Peak. It wasn't as straightforward as it originally looked, but is definitely doable." — Kevin • Oct 14, 2017
"I put down the mop and stepped away from Domestication for a Quick jog, scramble, bouldering jaunt up to Grey Cap Peak from Sandstone Quarry. What a blast! I’ve done this peak before but it was my 1st time solo. I brought my navigation device just in case but I just navigated from memory and landmarks and I found my way without turning it on. 6.2 miles, 1,835’ gain, 3:32hr. Up to peak in 2:04hr, 13 min snack....down in 1:15hr. Back to the mop and Bday fun." — paula.raimondi • Oct 13, 2017
"St Valentines Day Quad Massacre. 4 peaks, 10 miles, 4,000' in 6hrs. We traversed Goatbed Ridge (south to north) bagging Goat Bed Peak, Gray Cap and then Turtlehead Peak. We bagged Red Cap on the way back just to solidify the pain. Great Day. Super workout." — paula.raimondi • Feb 14, 2017
"New peak on my 48th Bday with Harlan. It was below freezing but with full sunshine and no wind the Groundhog wasn't too cold and saw her shadow. I had a failed attempt at this peak a few days ago but this killer alternative route Harlan picked had me bounding to the top with no problem. Great workout" — paula.raimondi • Feb 2, 2016
