"4.7 miles w/2,700' elevation gain (~2 hrs) from Angelus Oaks TH Parking (TH: 5,950'). TH is located off SR-38 at mile marker 20.00 near the Angelus Oaks Fire Department (follow signs, dirt road is passable with low-clearance vehicles). The peak trail (1W07) is well maintained and outside the Lake Fire closure area.
Trail 1W07 San Bernardino Peak Trail begins steeply, gaining 650' of elevation in the first mile. It heads easterly through a forest of Jeffrey and Sugar Pine, Oak and White Fir which provide good shade on the trail. At about an hour into the hike (~2.25 miles) I had gained 1,500' total elevation and passed into the western end of the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Trail is well defined and shaded by Jeffrey Pine through the 8,200' contour, the trail then levels and begins a long traverse of chinquapin oak and manzanita slopes. About 4.4 miles from the TH the trail heads south and rounds Gerhardt Peak. Remain on the trail past the peak until the trail begins heading east; at this higher point turn right/west and hike x-country to the highest rock pile. There is a maintained register can; the peak is tree-covered so viewpoints are sparse. " — BradStemm • Jun 29, 2016
