"I drove up to the parking lot of Sentinel peak, where it was littered with trash despite an abundance of trash cans and nice canopies installed by the city's park service. The air smelled like weed and there were about a dozen cars in the parking lot around noon. The summit hike was very short, and the view was neat, but the graffiti and trash detracted from the experience. It is a shame because the park amenities try to offer a nice experience, but few respect the area. The hike took me 4 mins to the summit with sweeping views of downtown Tucson.
I next drove to Tumamoc Hill, where I parked just outside the service road leading up to the summit around 1220. I came across over 30 people during the hike, but the paved road was well marked, plenty of signs for social distancing, and people seemed to all be wearing masks, despite the heat. I was impressed. The heat, 102 degrees when I started, broiled me as I ascended via the paved road. The road started with a gentle slope that became very steep after reaching the few structures standing around the halfway point. I saw signs for water, but I did not stop. The final push was surprisingly difficult relative to my expectations, but ..." — mchikes • Sep 20, 2020
"The drive to Tucson from Las Vegas was long but uneventful. After checking into our hotel, and going out and finding dinner (The Parish, southern/Louisiana comfort food with a Southwestern flare, A+ would recommend) I felt restless, but also not really willing to drive into downtown. That had been the plan, but... I didn't want to go to a bar or parallel park for that matter. So... we looked at other things. And found that there was a little peak park that you drove most of the way to the top and then could hike to the top of the peak. A peak for me? And not too long or steep of a walk for Joe (not a peakbagger/hiker)? Sounds like a plan. The haze from the California wildfires was thick over Tuscon, but we still had decent views of the city itself. A good way to start our vacation. " — psychikingjes • Sep 13, 2020
