"Hiked up from Andy Lane parking area nursing a hamstring and sciatica. Chilly, windy day that warmed with the sun and forest, but was brutal on the ridge. Wind stung our face, but the winter views through the trees were worth it. Across the Catawba Valley we could easily view Sharp Top and Flat Top (Peaks of Otter), Apple Orchard, and Purgatory. "Went to explore regional mountains in the Roanoke area. I always see this one on my way home from work. It lurks in the distance on the left side of Mill Mountain as I drive along 581 into the city. This was a pretty simple, but steep walk on a drive with several homes along the way. Obstructed, but nice views of Mill Mountain, the Roanoke Valley, Weaver & Stewart Knob, and many other summits. Excellent shot of the Peaks of Otter on the way down." — runshigleyrun • Dec 27, 2022

"Excited to have been able to climb this peak. I was thrilled to NOT see No Trespassing signs. A steep, but short climb through the forest to a very curved and small knob at the top. I've noticed this tiny mountain each time from my seat at the Salem Red Sox games. It's a great workout on the thighs. Only views are in winter, but you can spot nearly every mountain surrounding the Roanoke Valley. As usual, there is a firepit made of stones. " — runshigleyrun • Dec 20, 2022

"I wasn't sure of what we would encounter on the exploration of this mountain in the Peaks of Otter region. Well, we got a freshly graveled and smoothed over road that winded through the beautiful winter Appalachians. We finally came to an old path that led steeply up the mountain. On top, we were greeted by a cleared field and spectacular views of Sharp Top." — runshigleyrun • Dec 17, 2022

"Beautiful December day. First time I've climbed Poor Mountain with no leaves on the trees. Great views of Roanoke Valley, surrounding and distant mountains, and even downtown Roanoke. Clouds created beautiful texture. This is a tough climb. A solid 4.5 miles to the peak with 2,160+ feet of elevation gain. " — runshigleyrun • Dec 11, 2022
