"For the second time in a row in the San Bernardinos, I had a totally different peak in mind but blew past it on my hike! My intent was to hike to Mill Peak (6,670') from the lower Exploration Trailhead off Keller Peak Road. It was supposed to be a very short hike (just under 4 miles r/t), but I kept following the Exploration Trail, apparently missing the junction with a dirt road, as I had followed the trail for quite a while, long enough that I started to run into Bush Chinquapin (Chrysolepis sempervirens), normally found above 7,000'! After the plant became very common, I also saw Keller Peak really close at hand, so again, I changed my plans accordingly. I then decided to hike to Slide Peak as I have never been to it, and it is very close to Keller, and I have visited Keller before. I followed the Exploration Trail to the Children's Forest area on Keller Peak Road, took a break as it was warm that day. After I was rested, I climbed up a gated dirt service track right next to the Children's Forest to summit Slide Peak, where Snow Valley's ski lift tops out! "Right before the unlocked gate for Keller Peak, I parked (over 4 miles from the start of the road). I walked back down the road a few dozen yards to a use trail going up the slope. Much to my surprise, the trail kept going thru the bushes and toward Slide Peak. Once there, I continued climbing the dirt road to the summit within the ski resort." — MikeTeeples • Sep 13, 2017
