"A beautiful walk up the deserted road with Sara and Jakers the dog. Barely made it as the sun quickly set behind Poor Mountain. Had to run the last bit, which consequently is the steepest bit. A clear evening with not too much color. Temperatures plummeted as we walked down the dark side of the mountain." — runshigleyrun • Oct 18, 2023
"Took a couple of friends up Roanoke Mountain on a summer day that felt more like an early autumn afternoon. Great conversation among friends and spectacular views on a remote, deserted road that leads up to phenomenal vantage points. " — runshigleyrun • Jul 30, 2022
"Beautiful, low humidity day up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Milkweed everywhere attracting the season's first monarchs. Clear views of the near Blue Ridge and distant Alleghenies. This is an easy hike with extremely rewarding views. As usual, I had the peak to myself. " — runshigleyrun • Jun 28, 2022
"A beautiful early summer evening with no humidity. For views, this is one of my favorites in the Roanoke Valley. Milkweed and Coreopsis dotted the way up the isolated mountain. " — runshigleyrun • Jun 10, 2022
"Recovering from bronchitis, I was able to slowly walk up the deserted road from the Blue Ridge Parkway up to Roanoke Mountain. The sunset was tremendous as rays darted across the Roanoke Valley. This is one of the least popular, but most beautiful mountain tops in the area. Perfect weather." — runshigleyrun • Nov 10, 2021
"Hiked and ran the deserted road up and around Roanoke Mountain. The parking areas are reminiscent of a Twilight Zone episode. Beautiful sunset overlooking Chestnut Ridge and Mill Mountain." — runshigleyrun • Oct 13, 2021
"Ran 6 or so miles at Explore Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway; stopped at Gum Spring Overlook and ran up the closed paved road to the top of Roanoke Mountain; had the mountain to myself; short dirt trail loops to peak, but best views are had coming down the deserted road, which is a 4+ mile loop of the mountain" — runshigleyrun • Jul 9, 2021
