"Phil the groundhog from Pennsylvania predicted a few days ago that there are six more weeks of winter, but certainly in the Iberian Peninsula, after one storm comes the next. Leonardo brought torrential rain to Andalusia, and now Marta is here.
In fact, the day started sunny in this mountain range, but before reaching the summit, a thick blanket of clouds covered the sky. It was quite encouraging to see that numerous almond trees were in full bloom. At the top of the Sierra del Aguila, there's a rocky ridge with some boulders that look ready to fall, and you have to scramble right through that area.
After regaining my strength, I headed towards the Puerto Frío area to climb the 908-meter peak. I was surprised not to see the weather radar sphere on the summit of Pico Pila; later, I saw it much lower down in a clear, flat area where it appears they are repairing it." — franciscobirruezo • Feb 7, 2026
"Time passes while I decide whether or not to go to the mountain this afternoon. In the end, I may have arrived a little late, but this makes the temperature very pleasant: 77 Fahrenheit with moderate winds in the higher elevations. I was also able to see the sunset and the moon. The downside is that the walking stick that has accompanied me these past few years broke on the way down the mountain. It served its purpose well, but I'll have to replace it." — franciscobirruezo • Aug 28, 2025
"On this cold afternoon today I am on the road to La Sierra de La Pila, I don't know why but I feel like climbing mountains and my legs respond to me, on other occasions I confess that I get lazy, the intense cold may activate the circulation of the blood or you want to move to warm up.
On the route I see globularia flowers, beautiful landscapes and I also find a spring with a small pool to accumulate water. When I return home I go straight to the supermarket because the walk gave me a serious desire to eat." — franciscobirruezo • Jan 13, 2025
"
Today I had to choose between a regional fair dedicated to caravanning that is held annually or going to the mountains.
I have decided the second, because I wanted solitude and silence more, last night I had dinner with some friends and I got home after midnight.
Another cool day but this time with a lot of clouds so the best way to warm up is to climb higher to accumulate energy, if you also breathe fresh air, then in your home you will sleep like a groundhog. I see that the vegetation is gaining ground, perhaps it rains more now or it will be that people leave the fields to live in the cities.
In the village of Fuente Blanca next to Mount Cabezo Blanco there will be perhaps 15 or 20 people left, today there were more cars of people who visit their relatives on Sundays. Definitely in these places time has stopped and only the Moon and the Sun mark the rhythms each day." — franciscobirruezo • Jan 29, 2023
"This mountain is to the right of The Natural Pass of Puerto Frío (Sierra Pila). We have seen remains of old forest fires, it is not too high but has no path to the top. The almond trees were in bloom this month." — franciscobirruezo • Feb 17, 2018
