"I was on the first ascent of Mt. Augusta July 4, 1953. There have been several ascents since then. I attach a short account that I wrote recently. SNOWY WILDERNESS BEYOND THE BEYOND The wildest place I have been was the Seward Glacier in Yukon Territory. It is located where the Panhandle of southeast Alaska meets the Pan of Alaska, northwest of Yakutat Bay. The flat middle of the glacier at 6000 feet elevation is overshadowed on the north by a wall of rock and ice two miles high, the south face of Mt. Logan, at 19,551 feet the highest mountain in Canada. In 1952 I joined the \"King Peak - Yukon Expedition\", a group of eight led by Pete Schoening . This mountain-climbing expedition first climbed Mt. Augusta, 14070 feet elevation, on the south side of the Seward, then King Peak, on the north. Four of us went home after climbing Augusta because we had jobs waiting. The four other men stayed and climbed King Peak. The area is remote.
