"Completing the Old Man of Coniston, unfortunately the weather had turned overcast with lots of wind/rain and cloud cover. We followed a circular route from the car park at Walna Scar road.. It sets off in a westerly direction along Walna Scar road itself, before turning northwards to start the real climbing over Brown Pike, Buck Pike and Dow Crag. Every now and again we would be treated with a stunning pocket of clear sky to see the beautiful valleys around. Great walk would love to come back and do it again in better conditions. :)" — Nicolefrances • Jul 11, 2023
"Three scrambles, three Wainwrights.
The Bell is a lovely easy scramble on perfect rough rock, grade 1.
Brim Fell slabs again mainly on good rock, grade 2.
Dow Crag by the South Rake, grade 1.
Returned over The Old Man to make the three Wainwrights." — johnandsue4fun • May 3, 2023
"1/1/2023 A great walk on New Years Day.
Awful weather! Rain, sleet, hail, blowing a gale. Only saw 6 people all day and no views! Weather conditions probably added an hour to the time." — johnandsue4fun • Jan 1, 2023
"30/05/2022 Started from Torver. With Susan we climbed F buttress on Dow Crag - easy but serious scrambling with one harder roped pitch. A new way up for us.
NB - forgot to switch tracker off before driving home and don’t know how to edit track!" — johnandsue4fun • May 29, 2022
"19/05/2022 a lovely short afternoon outing on our local hills. Starting from Coniston we approached Dow Crag via the South Rake route ( an easy but pleasant scramble ). Tea on the summit was followed in 30 minutes by Coniston Old Man. Slightly backtracking over Brim Fell we took the relatively unfrequented route back to Low Water down Brim Fell Rake - excellent views towards the Old Man and the tourists sweating on their path! Four hours round trip and back in time for beers in the sunny garden.
Susan going well today." — johnandsue4fun • May 19, 2022
"Early lunch meant I could get some exercise on this nice day whilst leaving Susan to work in the garden! Very pleasant temperatures and good views today. Back home before dusk to check the gardening." — johnandsue4fun • Dec 28, 2021
"Short but very windy, cold, snowy walk from Torver up the south ridge of the Old Man, on to Dow Crag ( almost blown off the ridge ), thence onwards finish on Brown Pike. Descent back to Torver and home to find several big trees blown down, power cut, etc. Onwards to Kendal for the Alpine Club annual dinner. A day later we are still without mains electricity but enjoying a big log fire. As usual Susan accompanied me." — johnandsue4fun • Nov 27, 2021
"First visit to the hills for many months - COVID-19 lockdown rules in England at last allow visits to the hills. Today we ascended all the Coniston Fells. A good, cold walk. My lifetime partner and wife, Susan, was of course with me." — johnandsue4fun • Apr 13, 2021
"1st day of a walking break in the Lake District, set off from the Walna Scar path, nr Coniston, walked up past the old coppermine workings and slate quarries to Low Water, about 1000ft below the summit, then up steeply on the well trodden route to the summit. Good views all around the Lake District peaks and out to sea. From here we went along the ridge and onto Brim Fell in the strenghthening wind. Here we dropped down SW to Goats Hause, a pass above Goats Water. From here we could see the details of the crags that drop from the summit of Dow Crag to Goats water. We then went up an easy but rocky route onto Dow Crag, where we scrambled onto the summit ledges and found shelter from the wind for a short break. We then headed down the S ridge, peering down into Great Gully and Easy Gully, before going onto Buck Pike and Brown Pike. Here we dropped down to the top of the Walna Scar pass and headed down for 2 miles back to our start point, but unfortunately the weather turned to rain 30 minutes before the end. "NW Office Hike, from Coniston via Crowberry Hawes and Low Water, descending via Brown Pike and the Walna Scar Road. Strong cold gusting north-east wind, cloud, and a little rain." — marktrengove2 • Apr 18, 2008
