"An interesting route to the extinct Carmolí volcano. About seven million years ago, this volcanic cone experienced violent explosions, spewing lava, pyroclastic material, and ash. Today, erosion has sculpted whimsical shapes into the orange and gray andesite.
I saw many white asparagus plants and dwarf palms before reaching the summit from the west. The views of the Mar Menor are excellent. To the north lies the Marina del Carmolí, a brackish cryptowetland. To the west and south are large estates with very fertile land, but a strip has been left uncultivated to prevent nitrates from disrupting the saltwater lagoon's ecosystem. Some abandoned bunkers indicate that this area was used by the military in the last century." — franciscobirruezo • Nov 5, 2025
