"The gray sky accompanies my climb up this mountain, part of the Natura 2000 network. The slopes are covered in lavender and rockrose, and partridges roam freely. Rabbits born this spring also scamper about among the undergrowth.
From the summit, I can see the city of Águilas and some greenhouses used for intensive agriculture. The area's pleasant climate and fertile soil have allowed for the growth of cultivated lands that have transformed these landscapes in recent decades.
These mountains, however, fortunately remain a protected area and a refuge for numerous species of flora and fauna." — franciscobirruezo • Apr 11, 2026
"Route to Cabezo de Los Mayorales and Peak 676 m on the Aguilas coast. At the beginning of the route, I find a Moorish tortoise crouching by the path, lots of new grass, and dozens of species of flowers and aromatic plants accompany me the entire way. Perhaps this spectacle is seen once every half-century due to extraordinary rainfall.
I really enjoy the hike, also seeing numerous lizards and the occasional rabbit.
From the top of Cabezo de Los Mayorales, I head to Peak 676 along a narrow path full of loose stones that constantly goes up and down and up again, but it's made fun by the number of plants and flowers I encounter." — franciscobirruezo • Apr 18, 2025
"Route through the Sierra de Mayorales in Aguilas, sunny but cool day. The track leading up to the peak is in good condition and we see lavenders and other flowering bushes as we ascend. The day is clear and we have good views of the surroundings. From
At the top we take a path towards the southwest that winds along the crest of the mountain range towards the Cabezo de la Cruz. We found some pine trees planted by locals that served as shade when they lived and worked in this mountain range. We also see some abandoned hunting posts. Now this area is protected and the birds are the queens of the place." — franciscobirruezo • Dec 16, 2023
"I am at kilometer 7 of road D13 near La Cuesta de Gos, seeing the green landscape I find it difficult to think that I am in one of the arid areas of Europe.
The mountain has been filled with lavender and it smells great. I go up to Mayorales on a road full of mud and beside me runs water down. It stopped raining recently and that encourages me to climb another peak, La Morra Negra, located in South Mayorales. I find a tractor of chains that had past times of more activity.
The slope forces me to strain and stop to lower the heart rate. I still can't see anyone else while I discover that I forgot lunch at home.
Back I meditate for a while taking advantage of an ephemeral sunbeam and above all I give thanks for simply breathing." — franciscobirruezo • Jan 21, 2020
"I drive about 60 miles to the starting point of the route. This place is located at kilometer 7 of road RM D13 near Aguilas.
I pass by Cabezo de Los Mayorales and to the right begins a narrow path that continues southwest and goes through the crest of the Sierra. It reminds me of a roller coaster always going up and down, but walking.
There are few shadows to take refuge so I drink water frequently. Near the Cabezo de La Cruz I see some half-dead cactuses that remind me that I walk through semidesertic terrain.
I see butterflies, partridges and ocellated lizards, also beetles and other insects.
I have a long time to get home, I drive at 55 miles per hour, on the radio you hear a preacher from the Bronx talking about Jacob.
It occurs to me that the world seems small and yet it is infinite." — franciscobirruezo • Mar 9, 2019
"We have climbed this mountain with some good friends and their pet, a brown labrador puppy. The climb is on the north side and the best view of the coast is achivied from the top." — franciscobirruezo • May 13, 2018
