"From the wide pullout (John Henge Trailhead), I crossed the highway And picked up the PCT at the point where the PCT crosses the highway. After walking a few yards on the PCT, I left it on the left on what looked like an old dirt road. I followed the overgrown road until it petered out. I then began ascending the slope in a non-bush whacking x-country route toward the highest point I could see. Fortunately, it was Peak 6629. Quickly, I topped out and enjoyed the views. To the west I saw two other rocky summits that were about the same elevation. I set out to go x-country to these summits as well. The second of these two summits was later determined to be Valcrest Rocks. It looked like I would’ve needed to technical climb to it’s true summit, so I made the executive-like decision to not stand on its highest point. Instead I continued going X-country back to ACH and back to the parking area, while forming a square shaped loop." — MikeTeeples • Aug 31, 2019
"Peak 6629 (San Gabriels) can be easily reached from the turnout on the south side of HWY 2 at mile marker 54.10, known as the John Henge Trailhead, which is a very wide, paved turnout between Three Points and Cloudburst Summit. It has a few benches and a vault toilet. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway here. I crossed the highway to the north side near the "access road" to Glenwood Camp. I followed a small path NE that crossed the PCT which was roughly paralleling the dirt road a short time looking for a viable cross country ascent route up to the peak. I left the trail after following it for about 50-100 yards and started climbing in a NW direction. My route went over a small portion of rock scrambling (some minor class 2 moves here and there), mostly to avoid the Poodle Dog Bush (both dead and thriving) that was common on this generally southeast facing slope. I eventually rose to an area of mostly open country at the 6,600' contour under scattered Jeffrey Pines, and found a small summit immediately to the east. Then, off to the southwest, I saw a slightly higher peak, which would be 6629. I headed along the ridge and met 6629, and was shocked to see a survey ma..." — brianpowell • Jul 14, 2018
