"Arizona P2K (29/73). After driving past Mount Ord and Mazatzal Peak on my to and from Payson for many years, this weekend seems as good as any to finally go for these peaks. Clocking off work on Friday I drove up as far as is allowed and then hiked then remaining short stretch of road. Nice easy peak with great views of the Tonto Basin with Roosevelt Lake and an interesting angle of Four Peaks. Along with a view of the the next day's goal Mazatzal Peak. " — matty44m • Apr 7, 2023
"After resting from a morning hike of Camelback, I searched for a hike near Phoenix that wouldn’t subject me the 90+ Fahrenheit temperatures (a tough task even in late September). After scouring this app and the Weather Channel’s temp map, I settled on Mount Ord, which was only an hour east of my hotel.
By the time I parked my car (at the start of the FR 626 route other people here have taken) it was 3 hours to sunset. Determined not to do any nocturnal hiking, I started marching at a brisk pace to the summit 5 miles off with the idea in mind that I would turn around halfway between starting and sunset.
The path along it’s length is gradual and offers fantastic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. There is a sharp shift from grassland to coniferous forest about a mile in that I initially didn’t register but noticed on the way back. To my surprise I ended up summiting roughly 10 minutes prior to my turn around point, so I had plenty of time to take in the views from the top. Made my way back to the car before sunset by a mix of quick walking and jogging down the mountain. Very satisfying hike!" — tylerdelia • Sep 25, 2021
"Drove up the forest road (fairly short and easy, but narrow) from SR 87 to the locked gate, then quickly hiked up to the summit before the monsoon hit.
The views along the road are worth the trip." — Gabsolute • Aug 26, 2017
"Last day of peak bagging on this Trip before heading home to Las Vegas, Drove up to the Gate and hiked to the Top. Challenging to drive up with that much Snow on the Road which gets steep at times. Great View!!" — Nuernberger • Dec 21, 2015
"First trip of I'm sure many into Tonto. Hiked up the road from the junction with FR 1680, about 8 miles rt. Took the north ridge directly off until it hit the road way down, easy cross country and gets you off the road. " — Christopher • Jul 19, 2015
