"Took advantage of friends doing the 13 Peaks challenge to tackle the peaks above Hout Bay, focusing on Karbonkelberg. A very tough summit as described by previous notes. We were fortunate to find a good rock ladder/staircase up the side to the ridge line but traversing along the ridge was tough with a lot of fighting of bushes and trying to wind through the trees that sit between the rocks along the ridge line." — davidcase • Apr 8, 2023
"Started at Sandy Bay we kept to the coast line past the two shipwrecks. From the Boss 400 we took Duiker Ridge up to the old radar station, then looked for a path or easy entry up to the summit of Karbonkelberg. After an unpleasant 200m bundu bash up the ridge we stared another bundu bash and scamble in the face. It just had to be done, and glad we did so." — LeRoux-Kotze • Feb 27, 2021
"Like Mike_Golby states on one of his images Karbonkelberg summit has no path. It is completely overgrown with dense bushes that grow into each other. I thought I could summit along a ridge of rocks which I later realized was a ridge of boulders and the bushes growing in between the boulders were actually trees. Needless to say, I came across a few hair raising drop offs along the way. I reached the summit with a combination of boulder hopping and climbing, as well as a little crawling under the slightly less dense undergrowth. It took me more than an hour to travel less than two kilometers to the summit and back to Shave's Pass.
If you should ever attempt a summit of Kabonkelberg there are a few things you should be aware of. Firstly, there is no path to the summit. The closest path to the summit is about 120 meters below it and 250 meter away (as the crow fly's). Secondly, the area is remote. You are unlikely to be found should you get stuck/injured. this is worsened by the fact that the vegetation is so dense.
Thirdly, there are some surprise drop offs and ledges which are disguised by the dense vegetation. You will most probably be unaware of them until you are standing on the..." — desdeary • Jan 9, 2016
