"7:30 Start from Helderberg NR. 3 hours up and 2:30 down. Perfect Autumn day with zero wind. The well maintained Protea trail up the south side is a rarity climbing mountains and makes the approach so much quicker and more enjoyable. The Waboom trail coming down a nice alternative to just an out and back. In Autumn a lot of shade even on the way down at lunch time. Take water +++ as none on the trail. The last gully going up from the northern (Stellenbosch) side to the base of the main Dome is the worst part with a lot of loose rocks in the path which basically goes up the way the water comes down. Awesome 360 views on top." — dawidburger • Apr 16, 2023
"One of the tougher trails in the region, owing to the shale surfaces and loose rocks. A truly beautiful trail though, with breathtaking 360 views of all of the Cape, and phenomenal flora. Unfortunately there is not much fauna to be appreciative of since it is a widely popular route, with lots of daily foot-traffic. This does not remove from the beauty of the region however, and I definitely recommend this route to nature photographers. Keep lots of water handy, as there are no water sources along the way save for one stream at the start of the trail." — WadeyB • Dec 1, 2019
"Beautiful climb up West Peak on to Helderberg Dome. Very cloudy in the morning but cleared up as we summited West Peak. The wind picked up to hassle force at mid day (but there was a storm on its way that evening) the fynbos is old and dense at the moment, especially up the West Peak Ridge.
