"Nice cool morning, reaching for the sun hoody for warmth, to T-bone the Black Dome range from Big Hollow road with Mimi. Afterwards we headed to Peck road to do an out & back of WHP." — Nimblefoot • Aug 3, 2025
"Another odd combination of WHP first thing in the morning from Peck road then over to Prediger road to hit Twin and Indian Head. A bit toasty temperature-wise so a costume change between hikes was in order. The excess heat put plenty of haze in all the views. No surprising very few others out in the mountains. Only bumped into one group that included two friends, they were smartly keeping it easy by doing a loop of just Indian Head." — Nimblefoot • Jun 24, 2025
"A solo day doing WHP to complete 3-season round #47 then up to the end of Big Hollow road to complete 3-season ascent #49 for Blackhead bringing it even with Black Dome and Thomas Cole.
To finish the day I dropped down Rt 214 to the Becker Hollow TH to climb Hunter to bring my total “known” ascent count to 79. Also completing the ‘25 DEC fire tower challenge. Forgot how much of a steady grind the upper half of the trail is, took the yellow short cut trail to the tower. Temps were pleasant and the bugs were not a problem." — Nimblefoot • Jun 3, 2025
"Did WHP from Peck road to close out 3-season round #47 and get total # of ascents to 70.
Ate my lunch on my way over to the Woodstock area to climb up to the tower on Overlook mountain. Fortunately the regular lot was only half full so there was plenty of parking spots to choose from and no need to drop down to the overflow lot. Didn’t climb the tower but did take in the view out over the Hudson River before a speedy descent.
To kill more time I headed to the Catskill Information Center to take the easy stroll over to the Upper Esopus fire tower. Four out of six towers done for the ‘25 DEC fire tower challenge, just need Tremper and Hunter." — Nimblefoot • May 30, 2025
"Mimi and I did a T-bone hike of the Blackhead range from Big Hollow road followed by an out and back of WHP from Peck road. This was our first time climbing WHP from Peck road since the fatal plane crash back in November ‘24. I think we found the crash site but didn’t spend time fully checking as the day was getting late and the black flies were really annoying Mimi.
On our way back to Lockwood gap from Black Dome we wandered off trail to harvest some ramps that we spotted on our ascent. We intended to harvest more on WHP up close to the final ascent but they weren’t as plentiful as she expected. Plus the black flies were getting in their final bites before calling it a day so we made a bee-line for the parking lot. Sometime after 7pm the flies finally abated…phew! Otherwise a fine day to be in the mountains spotting wildflowers and enjoying the warm weather." — Nimblefoot • May 12, 2025
"Mimi(aka Ginseng Candy) and I enjoyed a leisurely paced hike of WHP to complete our single season winter round. We hiked out of the PA at the end of Big Hollow road, used for the Blackhead range, since the Peck road PA and trails are closed do to the plane crash several months ago. Hiking the section of the Black Dome range trail and Escarpment trail was a new experience for Mimi. The red marked Range trail doesn’t get the same usage as other trails so it is immediately noticed by the lack of wear and tear. We carried only micro spikes but they only went for a ride as the icy spots were easily dealt with without them otherwise we would have constantly been putting them on and off.
We spent about an hour at the view ledge celebrating our completion with ramen soup made on the spot and a variety of cookies while basking in the warm sunshine. Even the wind had a warmth to it so I impelled to doff the pants and return to the PA in shorts…yay! On our way out we finally started to see other hikers on such a fine day, very Spring-like." — Nimblefoot • Mar 15, 2025
"Rebecca and I did the Blackhead range and Windham High Point in two separate out and back hikes. Originally we were going to do the peaks in a horseshoe hike from Peck Road to Barnum Road but once a third member of our party had to back out we change to the old school way.
We did the Blackhead Range first from Big Hollow road starting with Blackhead then the other two. The new switch back just below the open ledge on BH is a nice improvement but now they need to improve the final ascent to the ledge. The loose stone on top of the larger rocks is still inviting many slips and falls. On our descent from Lockwood gap we ran into a friend of ours ascending with her dog. Fortunately for Rebecca she found a hiking companion for the next day so she wouldn’t have to do Sherrill and North Dome solo.
Right before we took off for WHP from Peck road a hunter returned to the PA. Upon chatting with him he informed us that there wasn’t many others out hunting. Over the years there has been a steady decline for that particular area. Rebecca was a bit concerned about bears while pointing to the picture of one inside the kiosk. I told her it was only a paper bear and was no threat, the hunter..." — Nimblefoot • Nov 19, 2024
"Hiked up to Windham High Peak today from Route 23. Very easy and mellow the whole way, but lackluster views from the top. View to the north is all plains and the Blackhead Mountains are the only peaks you can see from the south view. Still a nice day in the woods, and the Norway Spruce plantation was beautiful." — elimihuta • Oct 6, 2024
"Windham and Blackhead Range horseshoe with Tom R. We met at Barnum road then I shuttled us over to Peck road to start out on the Elm Ridge trail to reach the Escarpment trail. Somewhat surprising the Elm Ridge trail was quite dry in the areas that are normally fairly swampy allowing us to stay on the trail. Tom led with a steady fast pace all day basically no stops till we get to Brooklyn. Our longest stop was at the view off of Blackhead for lunch shortly after 11am. On our descent down to Lockwood Gap we passed a young couple ascending just below the view, they would be the only other hikers we would see. It was a perfect day for a hike, warm with a slight breeze once and awhile and plenty of sun. We continued along the range tagging Black Dome, Thomas Cole and Camel Hump, bypassing the true summit of the Caudal. Back to Barnum road by 2pm for roughly a 14 mile horseshoe. Need more days like today, still in shorts despite the AM start temp of 39* finishing in the upper 60s/low 70s." — Nimblefoot • Sep 6, 2024
"The Windham HP/Blackhead range horseshoe with (2)Toms and Rebecca. Actually more of a complete loop as we started and ended at the DEP “field” along Co Rt 56 below WHP.
After sauntering across the field, getting our feet soaked, we commenced on an easy whack up to WHP which involved the use of old woods roads making the nav straight forward. Used trails from there to Thomas Cole summit. Continued on the Range trail to get to our jump off point for a whack down to a DEP parcel that drops us, via a grassy road, down to Co Rt 56. A 5 minute road walk brought us back to our cars. A pleasant 12 mile loop." — Nimblefoot • Aug 28, 2024
