"A nice solo hike with spikes on a mild winter day. 2 others on the trail. Got chillier on the way down when clouds came in for rain. Easy terrain. No tricky or really steep parts. " — lfrancois • Feb 22, 2024
"On a nippy morning, that fortunately warmed up nicely, three of us did a T-bone out and back hike of the Blackhead range using only micro spikes. A few days ago a snowstorm hit the greater Hudson Valley area, bringing us back to winter after days of spring-like weather, but barely a flake dropped in the Catskills so no snowshoes. We ate our lunches in the car while driving from Big Hollow TH to Peck road TH, rather short distance, then proceeded onto an afternoon saunter of WHP. The trails were basically devoid of any snow so the spikes didn’t go on to about 2800’ do to long sections of ice spectacled with short sections of bare rocks…arghh! A speedy descent meant no headlamps were harmed on this venture." — Nimblefoot • Feb 15, 2024
"Did the Blackhead range and WHP for Mimi’s single season winter. First we did a T-bone out and back of the Blackhead range from the end of Big Hollow road then we dropped down to Peck road for an O&B of WHP. The snowshoes stayed in the car all day but should have taken for the Blackhead range so to allow us stay on top of the soft snow instead of plunging into it. On WHP there was no need for snowshoes and the ice/snow was very spotty. The minimal amount of snow was mostly near the summit ridge. Down low the trails were wet and muddy from the recent melt-out and rain.
Because of our slow progress in the Blackhead range and a conversationally casual pace up WHP we descended it for the most part in the dark which added to the fun. Headlamps eventually came out when we couldn’t see the trail very well." — Nimblefoot • Jan 27, 2024
"Rebecca Q joined Richard and I for a hike of Giant Ledge and Panther in the morning. When we headed up at 7:30 the temp was 9* then upon our return after 11 the temp had rose to 28*. We brought both spikes and snowshoes but since the trail was broken out and well packed down the ‘shoes stayed on our packs while we hiked with spikes on for better grip.
Over to Peck road PA for WHP by 1:00 pm the temp had rose to 34*. For this hike we popped on the micro spikes and left the snowshoes in the car. Much less snow from TH to summit than what we found on Panther so not all the rocks/roots were as well covered. In the AM we had a bright blue sky with plenty of sun then after noon we got complete overcast sky as the temp continued to rise.

"Hiked with my favorite winter sports companion, Kim.
Started out from the trailhead on Rte 23 to hike the Escarpment Trail. We were the only car in the lot at 07:00, & it was about 30° out, grey and cloudy.
We scurried across the highway like a couple of frightened deer, walked past a nice little beaver pond on some beautifully crafted wooden bridges. Signed in and away we went!
The trail was very hard frozen packed dirt with a little bit of ice here and there to start - around .75mi in we put our microspikes on as the ice increased. Not too long after putting our spikes on, we encountered some running water under the ice and broke through a little bit, this would continue on & off throughout the hike. We encountered a well packed and prepared foursome who passed us quickly on their way up. They were super fast!
The last half mile or so was hard icy packed snow with some depth to it that had been bare booted to shit, so we left our snowshoes on our backs. Probably more dangerous to wear them with how uneven the trail was.
The foursome passed us on their way back out just below the top. The summit was uneventful & we backtracked to a small viewpoint we liked when w..." — kellieirene • Jan 14, 2024
"After meeting Johnny at the New Paltz park and ride he drove us up to the hair-pin curve on Co Rt 47 for a climb of Panther cruising over Giant Ledge in the process. On our way back I showed Johnny my shortcut from the turnoff for the spring straight down to the parking area just for a change of pace. The day heated up quite rapidly, we both wished we had worn shorts. Once back to Rt 47 we drove over to Peck road for a climb of WHP. It was nice to discover Peck road had been repaved which extended into the formally dirt parking lot. The day continued to get too warm with only an occasional breeze and cloud cover to provide some comfort." — Nimblefoot • Oct 25, 2023
"Five of us set out to do a loop-like hike of the Blackhead range from the end of Big Hollow road and using the Batavia Kill and Escarpment trails. The climb up to Blackhead proved to be too much for Kelly’s husband Tony, who was still recovering from a virus, so he bailed out at Lockwood gap. The four of us did an o&b to Thomas Cole then descended out of Lockwood. The day was still early so Richard and I headed down to Peck road to go climb WHP as it was so close while the others headed home. Tagged peak #417/420 of my 4th grid and Richard got peak #338 of his first. Warm/humid day mid-week so didn’t see many other hikers enjoying a fine summer day with virtually no threat of rain for a pleasant change." — Nimblefoot • Jul 5, 2023
"it was a beautiful day.
Ran into a couple of fellas who were going on to Thomas Cole/BlackDome.
This was enough for me today.
Nice simple trail. Not too many steep parts.
The view just before the peak is the money spot. You can see the Blacks and Thomas Cole there." — HeyJoe • May 11, 2023
"T-bone hike of the Blackhead range with Peter and Mimi followed by a jaunt up to Windham HP. Warmer than normal temps have the ramps popping up nicely along with Trout lilies, red trilliums and Dutchman’s breeches.

"A nice spring hike with Nancy before the rain. Took escarpment trail with spikes the whole way. Easy up with no sketchy places. Slushy snow on the way down. A few ladies chasing kids and guys in sneakers! " — lfrancois • Mar 31, 2023
