Vermont mountains highlights
- The lower-elevation Taconic Mountains lie in the southwest corner of the state, extending up from Massachusetts.
- The rugged, 272-mile long Long Trail crests the spine of the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Canada, traversing the summit of over 50 peaks along the way.
- The 5 peaks over 4,000 ft all lie in the Green Mountains. The highest is Mt. Mansfield, home of ski area Stowe.
- Named after the French Les Monts Verts, meaning "the Green Mountains". The Green Mountains, a spine of peaks stretching north-south for 280 miles, dominate the state's geography.

"Hiked Bald from Harbour Rd. in Woodford. Early morning clouds cleared & a bluebird day was in store. I used spikes as the lower section of the
trail was somewhat icy. However, the middle & upper portions were very snowy & I wished I had brought my snowshoes...oh well. The only views
to be had were at the junction with the West Ridge Trail. Nice view of Mt. Greylock from this semi-open spot. The actual summit of Bald is wooded
with no views to be had. Makes ya wonder why it's named Bald??" — billsussdorff • Dec 11, 2019

"Lousy day for a hike, but when the urge hits ya gotta go with it! Parked at the big lot off Rt. 9 & followed the white blazed trail 'til it intersected with
the summit trail. The summit is totally wooded, so no views today with the weather. Maybe on a clear day you might get some glimpses between the
trees. The actual ski area now long gone is on the other side of the road on the east flank of Mt. Olga." — billsussdorff • Nov 19, 2019

"Hiked the old carriage road to the top of Wantastiquet. Nice views of Brattleboro & Mt. Snow from the summit. Putney was
another short hike to an open summit with views of Mt. Monadnock to the east & Stratton to the west." — billsussdorff • Nov 13, 2019

"Hiked both Jay Peak & Big Jay via the LT from Rt. 242. My main goal was Big Jay as I've hiked Jay Peak before, but one doesn't
happen without the other so... The herd path to Big Jay is known to be muddy & it didn't disappoint. The mud coupled with
much blow down made for an interesting bushwhack. Some nice views back to Jay Peak & the tram station near the top of
Big Jay. All in all, a great hike & now I've hiked all 28 peaks in Vt. over 3500 ft." — billsussdorff • Oct 24, 2019
