"I didn't initially intend to hike this peak. I took the train out to Champéry early in the morning to do the via ferrata before the afternoon thunderstorms were supposed to pass through. Once I had completed the via ferrata, it started to rain, but I continued on, thinking I'd stay below treeline. After 30 minutes or so, I noticed that the clouds were breaking up further up the massif, so I decided I'd try to reach the Lacs d'Antème. Once I reached the trail junction above treeline towards the lakes, I noticed that the entire slope was still covered with snow, and even witnessed an avalanche on the neighboring arête. I hadn't brought crampons, and a fall along the slope looked like certain death or debilitation, so I continued off-trail up the south side of the Arête de Sélaire (the north side was covered by a glacier and more late-season snow). I finally stopped at the peak of Tinderray to enjoy the view into the valley as well as the incredible view of the Dents du Midi looming overhead." — ccarney • May 28, 2016
