Down in Croydon again to attend my ancient father after another fall and spell in hospital, I took a few hours out from my duties to hike to the summit of Sanderstead Hill, the official high point in the London Borough of Croydon, the place of my birth. It features in the official list of the thirty-five London Borough Tops (see at http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/LondonBoroughs.php), so seemed worth a visit while I was confined without a car, following a vehicle collision.
I left my father’s house in a quiet road on the east flank of the Addington Hills and made my way up to the grassy heath that is the feature of these hills of sand and pebble. On their northern flank is a viewpoint that has been there for many years. The view north to London is now partially obscured by trees, but still represents a fine prospect, with the tall buildings in the City of London peeping over the Norwood Hill ridge and the Canary Wharf development clustered to the north-east.
