"Typical Kielder weather... aka drenched just crossing the road to the start of the trail. Parked car in lay-by near Kittythirst Cottage. Followed the main path but that led towards Kielder... sadly didn't notice until entering an area where the trees had been felled. Doubled back and took another wrong path to the quarries near Long Crag. Finally found a path to take me to the right path that had been hidden by forestry vehicles (a lot of forestry work happening there). The correct path should be the first left near the bottom of the hill.
At Rushy Knowe there is a lot of tree felling happening on the Scottish side of the border quite close to the path. The path is blocked by a fallen tree that is difficult to maneuver around/over just as you are leaving the forest for the heather. The ascent becomes very steep with 3 false summits after leaving the tree line.
The top is a bog. Lots of pools of water on way to summit cairn. The rain cleared as I reached Rushy Knowe but it was very windy at the summit with gusts that were strong enough to knock me over twice. Sadly, I didn't have time to do Kielder Stane too because I wasted the morning being lost. So just returned the same way ..." — NorthernWayfarer • Feb 20, 2017
