"I'm traveling to Cabo de Gata, where volcanic hills and desert meet the sea, a peaceful place to end the year with some outdoor activity. This afternoon I climbed Ave María Hill, which marks the northern end of Los Genoveses Beach.
The volcanic rock of the ground is crumbling with erosion, and the low scrub makes the climb easier.
The view from the top is excellent; I see some people swimming below, and some horseback riders on a dusty path. From the summit, I head to the old wheat mill and from there to the 92-meter hill before sunset. I imagine the people who lived in this area many years ago, working in agriculture, livestock farming, or fishing. Nothing remains of that; nature and beach tourism is what keeps the new generations connected to this land." — franciscobirruezo • Dec 31, 2025
"Just as I returned to the hotel after climbing these two mountains, I learned about the major power outage in the Iberian Peninsula from the maintenance staff.
These mountains are near San José and the old Molino del Collado de Los Genoveses. There is no trail to reach the top, and basalt stones and palmettos will be your only companions. These mountains were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and are very similar to each other, except for the altitude and the different views of the horizon that can be seen from their peaks." — franciscobirruezo • Apr 28, 2025
