"Another sunny day inspires me to head to the mountains. I set off for the 725-meter peak in the Sierra de La Pila, passing by the nearby 726-meter peak first.
A few almond trees in bloom add color to the landscape, contrasting with the dark green of the pines. Next to the 725-meter peak, a path circles it to the north, leading to "La Cueva de La Excomunión" (The Cave of Excommunication), located behind the peak. This cave is the result of a thrust fault in the limestone stratum. It was inhabited in prehistoric times and, more recently, during the 19th century, by a bandit named Jaime el Barbudo (Jaime the Bearded).
The large entrance to the cave resembles an owl or a ghost that wants to devour you. Inside, I found maidenhair fern and a large vaulted ceiling blackened by the smoke of the numerous fires lit by its inhabitants." — franciscobirruezo • Feb 22, 2026
"Quiet route following the Barranco del Mulo track heading north in the natural park, the day is pleasant with clouds that travel quickly and sometimes cover the sun. I see some almond trees with fruit that have suffered from the lack of rain this summer while I hear some distant tractor plowing some plot of land.
The mountain range looks lonely but cared for, I see water collection wells with ramps for amphibians, walls that support slopes, indicator signs. The people who take care of natural spaces have a job that is sometimes little recognized, I thank them for taking care of the landscapes and mountains that many of us like to enjoy." — franciscobirruezo • Aug 31, 2024
"Following the Camino del Boquerón, the walls of the Cerro del Boticario are on my right. I see more hikers than other times. When I reach the top I have a good view of the southwest side of Alto del Rincón de los Poyatos." — franciscobirruezo • Dec 8, 2018
