I wanted to hit some higher peaks Today, but was feeling a little under the weather, so I looked for something close by, something we hadn't done yet. When you hike/climb as much as we do, that's difficult to do !! There was a spot height of an area called Painted Rocks, in one of the nearby parks, I added it here and decided to go grab it. To start off with, we followed the usual trail to Blue Mountain (Charleston Lake Provincial Park). The intention then, was to take a left at the junction of Blue Mtn/Huckleberry Hollow, head to Huckleberry Hollow and Bushwhack to the summit. A few miles down the trail we came to yet another junction, a 3 way, Blue Mtn, Huckleberry Hollow and Mud Lake. The spot height/summit was directly on the Northern side of Mud lake, overlooking the lake, so plans changed at that point. We then followed a trail (more like a heard path) to Mud lake. Walking clockwise around the lake, and over a frozen creek (I advise anyone doing this in Summer, to go anti-clockwise as the creek would be impassable) we continued from there to bushwhack, finding where we were going was pretty straight forward from this point, it was just a case of negotiating the terrain, to find a walkable path. Eventually we hit the summit, there were very few views, but the hike up there was very interesting in itself, and gave a great new perspective of the area. There was no summit marker or cairn, judging by the fact, I think we were the first people to come here, as it's not really an area people would go to. I built a small cairn to mark the exact spot where the summit was. All in all, a long but very enjoyable day out, where we actually hiked further (as the crow flies) than we would've, had we hit the higher mountains in the Adirondacks !! But, another peak done, and to be the one to mark the summit, gave me a real sense of accomplishment.
