"As far as I can determine, Ocheyedan Mound is the 2nd highest named highpoint point in Iowa. It was believed to be the highest point in the state until 1971 when a spot to the northwest on Merrill Sterler's farm was measured to be 57 feet higher. So Ocheyedan Mound was bumped to 2nd place, but it still retained the honors of being the highest "named" point in the state. Eventually the 1670-foot spot on the Sterler's farm was named Hawkeye Point and Ocheyedan Mound was finally reduced to the 2nd highest "named" point in the state. I visited Ocheyedan Mound with my son, Marshall, during our quest to climb the 10 highest "named" highpoints in Iowa. Although Ocheyedan Mound has lost its once first place "lofty" status, it is still a real ascent unlike Hawkeye Point, where "climbers" gain less than 3 feet from their vehicles! The view from Ocheyedan Mound was one of our favorites." — Stewy • Jul 12, 2011
