IN THE BEGINNING... I was born at a very early age in Hollywood, California. By sheer coincidence, my dad was also born in Hollywood...AND, at the same age, too! I literally grew up in the theatre -- the theatre my father built. It was called the Horseshoe Stage Theatre. We lived in a small apartment just above the theatre. He sold the property back in the 1970s and it's now known as The Zephyr Theatre on Melrose Ave. My dad is a character actor and a bit of a nut, which worked out well since my mother was a psychiatric social worker. ON RELIGION... Neither of my parents was religious, but we celebrated Christmas every year. Since we lived a mostly Jewish area of L.A., my mom wanted us to learn about the holidays of our neighbors. We were perhaps the only house in the neighborhood with both a Christmas tree AND a menorah! Thinking that some kind of church might be helpful to growing kids, my mom took us to a Unitarian church for a short while. Well, I suppose that even a Unitarian church was too much nonsense to handle because we never went back. When asked about my religion, I used to say that I had none, as if I was deficient somehow. But then I thought about it and finally realized that I am the one who is normal. There was no god or heaven or hell. That was just stuff they made up a long time ago to get people to fall into line. Everyone -- every baby -- is born an atheist, but luckily I was never indoctrinated into believing a bunch of ancient mythologies like so many of my classmates had. I was the normal one and they were the ones living with delusions. I don't believe in gods for the same reason that most people don't believe in pixies and leprechauns -- they're simply not real. When I was very young, I thought that Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy were all very real. But I grew up and out of those delusions. It's too bad so many other people are still living with theirs. ON MUSIC... I always remember my mom playing the piano and singing. Ever since I was old enough to sit up, I had some kind of "instrument" in my hand to play along. Oh, it might have only been a wooden spoon and a saucepan to most observers, but it was a mighty kettle drum to me. In the seventh grade, I took up the trombone in the beginning band class. I did so well, I was accepted into the Cal Arts Youth Orchestra where I had to learn to play "real" music (symphonies, etc.), rather than just the easy arrangements available in the junior high band. It was exhilarating! I also joined the Los Angeles City Youth Band and met many wonderful people and performed in parades and concerts for many years. Intent on getting a degree in music, I entered Cal State University, Northridge as a music major. I did not finish school there, leaving to find full-time employment. Music eventually factored into my career path. For several years, I was a music editor for film and television productions, including "The Simpsons." The musical training allowed me to work more closely with the composers and arrangers as they created a production's soundtrack. It had been about twenty years since I hung up my horn when I left school. I realized how much I missed performing in an ensemble. I searched out community bands in my area and finally settled in with the Los Angeles Pierce Symphonic Winds, at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. Since 1998, I have been playing regularly, performing in concerts locally and around the world. For most of those years, I have been the ensemble's principal trombonist.
